Can you cut the router out of the virtual desktop Equation?

Hey guys , just got my quest two and I want to try virtual desktop ! I have an ok router ( net gear nighthawk r7000) and an ok internet connection ( 300mps , about 250mps when checking speed test ) but I have a good motherboard with built in wave 2 WiFi ( arous master z390 ) so I’m wondering if it would be better to cut out the router and just stream from my pc right to the quest 2 in the next room ? Thinking since I’m not going to be playing online games why do I need the Internet after it hits the pc ? If I could just make the PC a hotspot or something ? Not completely knowledgeable on networking though so I defer to you, The experts ???

You don't need the router if your computer has wifi.
You can create a wifi mobile hotspot in windows, then connect the Quest to that.
I just had Virtual Desktop streaming PC to Quest 2 with my router turned off to test it.

Now you peaked my interest, so if i were to install a WiFI card into my PC i could then stream directly from my PC to the Q2 without going through my router?

Yep, in theory. I've done zero research on what the issues people had are, I just know it works for me. But I've also only had it for a day.

If the creator of Virtual Desktop is having issues with PC hotspots, that may be because certain (many?) ones are poor quality at that. So it might be risky buying hardware for it. But for people who already have wifi on their PC, why not give it a try?
My laptop has a Killer Wireless-AC 1525 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, bluetooth) and seems to handle Virtual Desktop just fine. I also use it as a hotspot to host a Perception Neuron mocap suit at work.

(I like my Metabox laptop. 5 years on and it still handles VR fine)

That Reddit thread is almost a year old now so it's now maybe a little outdated.  Also, the author after doing his mods to get 5Ghz wifi (which included connecting to his router wifi)  then reconnected his PC to his router, so not without router as per this thread.  In any case did not seem to get all that much positive feedback.  If you want more up to date info you should be going to the Virtual Desktop discord channel and do a bit of searching.  The VD developer tries to avoid posting info outside his discord channel.  Actually, given the seemingly steady increase in reddit kiddies/trolls I'm starting to avoid most forum sections except for Nvidia, which I find at least has some  properly moderated info.

The VD developer continues to do heaps of testing and sorry mate, but if he recommends to avoid using wifi hotspots, that's good enough for me.  I suggest you do a lot more testing and research on this before posting this as a potential solution.  Thanks.

For me, this is not an issues since I have the recommended VD Internet/wifi setup which works great.  I still find it amazing that I get better results with most apps wireless w/VD than I do with Link (incl v23).

I tried that in the spring with my Quest 1 and gave it up from what I was reading from the dev and the windows limitation claim of 2.4. I just tried it again and it wasn't the chaotic mess it was in the spring when I last tried. I chased my tail for a bit last spring on this and went as far as picking up an ASUS card just for this reason. Well this thread inspired me to chase my tail a bit more on this.

The missing piece for me was in Kojack's reddit link "PC must be on the same 5g network for it to show up as 5g.." I was using the standard wired connection. So I reinstalled that card, connected to my 5g on my PC and it is indeed showing up as 5g now in virtual desktop. The image quality is the same as when connecting o my router ut if I turn my head quickly I see a black line on both sides until it catches up, only milliseconds, but noticeable. Also twice in a 10-15 min VR session with Aircar, serious freezing for about a second.

I figured if I could get it to 5g it would solve the stuttering I was getting. It does not. It works but no way could I play an action game like that. I can see why the VD dev doesn't recommend.  Nice experiment if you're kinky like me but in my case, hotspot is still not practical when my router does a much better job with virtual desktop. I suspect IndianaJune's nighthawk is still a much better option as well.

The Answer is Yes you can directly stream from your PC's hotspot wifi adapter i can get 866mbps connection speed but i think i could get 1200 as my wifi does have dual aerials or antenna's it plays ok for me but i run a laptop Dell g7 7950 i7 9750h with RTX 2060M , currently like i said i am only connected at 866mbps and i am hoping to find away to enable the full 1200mbps that my wifi card is capable of. i have he 2.4ghz part disabled in the device settings for the wifi card this did not make a difference to the connection speed but means its not sending 2.4ghz signal into the room its only the 5ghz for the wife and 5 ghz for my phones hots to to my pc so i guess yes both phone and quest 2 connect at 866ghz each and i can play games over the wifi with virtual desktop running just fine as far as i can tell and as said above by another member my latency can go below 50 while playing games i would say in real terms the RTX 2060M version pre the new refresh 2060M's is equal to probably a GTX980 maybe a bit faster and slower is some titles if any one wants reference to the desktop equal.
