Do i NEED a smartphone?

OK, so i'm a bit of a weird "animal" for today's standards...but i just HATE smartphones and mobile phones in general. I'm a PC gamer, but from what i read, it seems like FB is a lot more focused on Quest. So i'm thinking about maybe buying Quest instead of Rift S. However, do i really need a smartphone for setup and purchasing games? I HATE these small zombie devices. Any way to set up quest by using PC?

Not on a pc, but some have has success using a tablet. The app is Android, and can't be run on a pc. It's only needed for the initial setup, so maybe even borrow a friend's phone for 10 minutes, buying them a 6-pack for their troubles. 😛

A tablet should do the trick.
You might even be able to hack it by installing Android on a VirtualBox on a laptop, and then installing Oculus on that. You'd have to find a way to share a WiFi connection between VirtualBox and your machine though. Quest taps into the phone or a tablet to get info on the WiFi connection it needs to use every time you go to a new WiFi area

I never even thought of using VirtualBox...damn. 😛 I installed Android to a Raspberry Pi 3B+, then got the app installed and connected to the Quest. Basically just wanted to cast to the Pi, but I just had a black screen. Could have been the RPi's lack of resources, or just bad timing as others had issues casting as well. But...it did connect. Hell...someone here got it to connect to their Android TV. If installing the Oculus app on a tv or even Android in VirtualBox, you'll also want to install Rotation Control, and set to 'landscape'...otherwise, it'll display vertically, without the ability to select and click anything. It also needs a wireless keyboard and mouse, as a remote didn't work. Logitech K400 Plus works great.

edit: Forgot to mention...seeing as the Oculus app is Android, then this will also work with Android boxes...ie: Kodi boxes, as long as it's running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or higher. Just remember to install Rotation Control and set to landscape.

@Comrade_Ivan...I just had a thought about VirtualBox, and I'm not sure the Oculus app will even install on x86 architecture, seeing as it's designed for ARM.

I'll ask my friend who's a programmer about installing apps on android OS running in virtualbox. I also know there is some developer software for app development that can run several generations of Android OS, so developers can test their apps on it. Might work.

Whatever device you do it on will need Bluetooth for the initial connection with the Quest. Not usually an issue for phones or tablets, but not guaranteed on desktop PCs.

DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3.

I thought it was WiFi direct, not Bluetooth, cause Bluetooth requires pairing and a permission to be given on the phone (which is something that Quest does not initiate)

I've done it in the past and it worked. I was even able to install apps directly from Google Play onto the virtual device. I forgot how it was done but I do remember having to jump through several hoops to pull it off.
If I can find my old cheat sheet, I'll post it here

It's been a while since I did it, but I thought there was a pairing process the first time I connected my Quest to the phone app. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I seem to recall having to look in the headset to get a sync code, then enter it on the phone app.
