So, my brother recently purchased the Quest 2, specifically to play Elite Dangerous and DCS. He is experiencing a very strange problem that I have not been able to help him with after trying everything I can think of. If he plays ED on his PC monitor, everything works perfect. But when he launches the game in VR, none of his 'axis' controls on the Thrustmaster T16000m HOTAS function. While in VR, he can go into the Control options and map the yaw, pitch and roll axes, and the game recognizes the inputs, but when he returns to the cockpit, moving any of the axes does nothing - neither the throttle or the stick move when operated. All other "buttons" on the Thrustmaster work fine. It's only the axis controls that do not work. Any ideas appreciated.
are you sure he is alt tabbed into the correct window? if Elite is not the active window the controls wont work and in VR it is very easy to not be in the active window. that said, at that point, all headlook will work fine, but the buttons wont work either as well as the throttle etc..
just ask him to make sure. failing that, perhaps when using VR the usb is overloaded so the HOTAS is not working correctly. have you tried rejigging your usb plugs around?
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂
Yeah, we've had that issue (window out of focus) happen before with DCS, so it was one of the first things we verified. What's confusing is that while in the game using VR, he can go into the Control options and remap an axis fine - the game recognizes the controller there. But when he returns to the cockpit the controls do not respond. It doesn't seem that there is a problem with the USB cable because all of the buttons on the controller work fine (and we've moved the controllers to different ports as well) - it's just the axes that don't work - very strange...
The only reason I can think of for analog controls to work in the settings screen but not in game is to make sure when changing the axis settings he clicks on the Apply button. If you change controls then go back to the cockpit by pressing escape, all changes are thrown away. I've done that by accident several times, gone in to change a button, escaped back to game, only to realise it wasn't saved.
The Oculus software has no understanding of joysticks (it only understands xbox controllers), so it shouldn't interfere.
Hmm, there's another thing that may be happening. Elite Dangerous has 3 sets of controls: flight controls, alternate flight controls and flight overrides.
Flight controls - the normal axis bindings to control the ship.
Alternate controls - using a button or switch you can switch to alternate controls which replace the flight controls.
Flight overrides - when your gear is down, anything set here will take over instead of the above.
If your brother is in a station when he tries this and there's some settings in Flight overrides, anything you bind in the normal settings won't work until you retract landing gear. Or if you have alternate controls toggled or held on, that will replace them too.
@kojack Thanks for the suggestions. One of the troubleshooting processes I did with him was to erase all mappings and start from scratch using my configuration, which works as expected. So, there appears to be something else out of the ordinary going on with his system.
@FrontierSupport: Thanks, he is not technically inclined, so is hesitant to try and work with support on this kind of thing. But I will send him this message and encourage him to contact you. Thanks!
