Quest 2 IPD Setting

On my Quest I have to set the IPD adjustment to the widest to get achieve the clearest picture. There is 4mm difference between the max IPD width on the Quest 2 and Quest. Will I see a difference?

There is no software IPD, so I am expecting chromatic aberrations and lens distortions of the images.
According to Carmack's FB connect stream, we can also expect reduced FOV.
I hope they will work towards fixing the 2 issues before its shipment in October.

A few reviews have mentioned that there is automatic software IPD adjustment to match the lens spacing (like the Ars Technica one that kojack mentioned).

I played a few games on my Quest 1 today and set the IPD to 68, when I’d normally have it on 70. I was actually able to play for a couple hours quite comfortably, no eye strain or headaches etc. So I’m guessing there must have been some other factors when I tried my friends Rift S preventing me from getting a clear image. My theory is therefore that the Quest 2 could work for me and I’ve gone ahead and ordered one on Amazon UK! They still have them available for delivery on 13th October. If it doesn’t work for me I’ll send it back.

There’s a big difference between the Quest at 68 and the Rift S at 63.5. My IPD is about 72, so I’m a little concerned about how much FOV reduction there will be, but at least the lens position should be a lot better than Go or Rift S.

my IPD is 65.5 which puts me exactly midway between the 63 and 68 settings and 2.5mm off from my proper IPD. i wanted to see if either of these would work for me so i set my Quest to each of these to compare. it was obvious that neither of these worked for me. my Pimax 5K+ has software IPD adjustment which actually works well to deal with similar issues. is there any hope that Oculus will add an additional software adjustment beyond just matching the lenses? this seems like a pretty easy fix for a pretty big issue.

That's what I was thinking - but as no-one was mentioning it, I thought I must have misheard a wish rather than a fact - but thanks for clearing it up - I did remember it right.

Although I prefer 70-72mm for VR, my actual IPD is 68mm. I'm just really glad they didn't go with the Rift S fixed IPD - that was dumb imo, and was the main reason I returned mine - the FoV was unacceptably narrow. Oh - and that horrible halo thing that hurt the front and back of my head.

I'm hoping, however, that the reduced IPD spoken of won't turn out to be the same in Quest 2 as it was for me in Rift S, shouldn't be - but won't know until I have it. That means I'll be buying from Amazon as it's easier to return it. That's what I suggest all people do who aren't sure.

edit: a point I forgot to mention. I was playing No Man's Sky VR the other day and noticed that a lot of the plants appeared to be floating above the ground, and some of the textures just weren't merging properly. Turned out I had accidentally decreased the IPD in my Index - when I put it back to maximum these weird effects disappeared. So those who are wondering what effect it may have, that's probably one.

That’s exactly why I have also purchased from Amazon ?

The Oculus store has a 30 day return window now so it may not make much difference anymore imho.

As far as IPD goes, mine measured recently by my optometrist is 69.0mm.  I can’t really see any difference with +/-2-3mm with either my Rift cv1 or Quest 1.

I also have a Go with fixed 63.5mm and I have never had any problems or eye strain even watching +2hr movies.  Could be that my +60yo eyes are more IPD tolerant.  Apparently persons younger that 30yo are more sensitive to this.  Whether or not you wear glasses with the headset may also make a difference.  Who knows?

in any case I’m confident that the 68mm Quest 2 setting will work fine for me.  I’m more concerned about losing those nice Oled blacks/contrast in dark games.  Guess I’ll find out in about 4 weeks time!

I am hoping that the Quest 2 lenses have a larger sweet spot to offset up to 3mm IPD difference. It translates to 1.5mm per eye, so still hopeful that I will have a sweet spot at 71mm IPD. The main concern is lens distortion correction for different colors when each eye is 1.5mm distant from the lens center. I am assuming that this still requires software IPD adjustment that might be an update down the line. If no one complains, this may never get fixed.

I bet I can return my Amazon Quest 2 a hell of a lot quicker than I can an Oculus Store one. Probably get the money back quicker, too. The post office is also about 70 yards from my house - for Oculus returns I have had to go to the next town to the drop-off point. Same as with Valve stuff.

Yep and Amazon often process the refund as soon as they have it recorded that the item is on the way back to them. Oculus won’t process a refund until they’ve actually received it back and inspected it etc.

Ya, Amazon returns/refunds do tend to be a lot faster for sure.  In the place I live Oculus uses a courier that will pick-up from my house, or I can drop it off at their depot (15min drive).  Because I do not live paycheck-to-paycheck the longer refund timeframe is no big deal for me.  Still, something to consider though.

My only concern about buying new expensive electronics from Amazon (I buy lots of other stuff from them and have been a Prime member for a long time btw) is after a product has been out for a while.  Because their return/refund policy is so good I have found that in the past, when I bought a new item it often came from returned stock.  I know that they say they inspect and often repackage returned items but with a few Kindle e-book readers I've bought from them in the past it was pretty obvious that these had been previously used.  Maybe no longer an issue, I don't know for sure.  I just feel more confident buying new from the Oculus store.
