Quest 2 IPD Setting

On my Quest I have to set the IPD adjustment to the widest to get achieve the clearest picture. There is 4mm difference between the max IPD width on the Quest 2 and Quest. Will I see a difference?

I ordered a Quest 2 as my first VR headset and I was/am so excited.  I figured one of the settings would work for me.  Now I've discovered my IPD is 70.5 mm, which at least one review (roadtovr) speculates as the maximum workable IPD for this headset.  Given my obsession with the perfect theater seat, perfectly clean glasses, etc., I worry this is going to be a constant annoyance.  But then again, since it's my first headset, maybe I won't notice?  Either way, I'm sad I'm outside the range of the headset's 3 settings.  😞  Not canceling my order, but now I'm cautiously optimistic instead of just stoked.

I feel the exact same way. I'm not too optimistic. Youtubers talking bout black outlines killing the immersion on IPD setting 3 makes me kinda worried.

My IPD is 71mm, how bad is this gonna turn up for me? Just got measured today at an eye doctor appointment to get new glasses frames.

Im guessing the slider option like the Quest was removed to help keep the price down.

Mine is 72mm, I had to cancel my costco order after realizing Q2 (one tuber claimed it'll leave folks with high IPD a crossed eye effect for 30 secs or more after taking it off, besides clarity won't be there and headache literally)  is going to be a 'duh' for me because of extreme low ranged IPD in Q2. I waited for version 2 but out of frustration bought Q1 for half the price from when released. This is coming from a guy who never owned VR set before and facebook did a terrible job on IPD range.  Q1 is not bad, I was able to up the resolution (by means of hack and mod) to sharpen the image little further, not a bad purchase I would say and the sensation you get is so real but graphics and VR world is all not there yet to make it believable.

You probably should have waited and tried the Q2 out first imho.  If it was a problem then you could have simply returned it.  Now you may never know.

If you are new to VR the last thing you should be doing is believe everything every YouTuber tells you. Fine to listen to opinions from anywhere but at the end of the day it's up to you to discover what works best.  Also, with VR don't expect immediate results and base everything on first impressions.  Otherwise, you will not end up happy with anything imho.

I don’t know which YouTuber said that about the cross-eyed effect, but he sounds like he has no clue what he’s talking about. There are some exaggerated assumptions there (extreme low ranged IPD, terrible job) that are not likely to be true.

My IPD is 72mm, and I’m looking forward to getting my Quest 2. Having used a Go with fixed lenses at 64mm spacing, I know that the Quest 2 will be better than that. The Go isn’t terrible, but clarity isn’t perfect with the lenses that far off centre. When I dial my Quest 1 down to 68 mm (the widest spacing in Quest 2), the clarity is perfectly fine, and the loss of FOV (due to lens position) is tiny. There may me slightly more FOV loss at the outer edges in the Quest 2 due to screen size, but I doubt it will be significant enough to ruin the experience.

Anyway, the Quest 1 is still a great headset, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, but I agree with Tom that you probably should have tried the Quest 2 before deciding that it’s terrible.

DK2, CV1, Go, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3.

I have a 71mm IPD and have preordered Q2. Out of frustration that I may have to return Q2, I bought myself Q1 for half price as well. Just waiting for it to ship from an APO zip code (8-10 days).
I played Walking Dead - Saints and Sinners for the first time last night with my Rift CV1, and I could not read the letters you pick up randomly in the game. CV1 has a low FOV, and if Q2 FOV is similar to CV1, I know that I will be immersed in VR just like I did last night with the bonus of higher clarity screen.
In his livestream session video, Tyriel Wood mentioned that even though his IPD (66.5mm) is closer to #3 setting, he prefers to use #2 setting which is 3.5mm away from 63mm and he is able to see things ok with a little chromatic aberration. He suggested black bars on the outside with setting #3, so it will be a slightly lower FOV on the sides. So, with #3 (68mm) setting, I am guessing that I will not see a blurred screen either, but will get a slightly lower FOV on the sides.
I just plan to test Q2 when I get it, and return it if I dont like it.

@twisteklabs I actually think my Rift cv1 FOV is a little better than my Quest 1.  No big deal for me since I don't tend to move my eyeballs around all that much, mainly just turn my head and concentrate on center views.

Also, with my cv1 using 2x SS I do not have any problems reading any letters with Saints and Sinners.  I have a 1080ti and asw = off.  Maybe with your 1080 you should try 2x SS with ASW = on.  Edit; This was with Ultra in-game setting btw so I'm not sure if these over-ride OTT settings?

It will be interesting to see what ipd setting works best for me with my preordered Quest 2.  Even though I have a measured ipd = 69.0mm I do not have any problems with my Go's 63.5mm, nor did I have any problems with a Rift S either.  I wear good quality glasses with high index lens (thinner with less distortion) so this may make a difference, don't know?

What I'm really looking forward to is how well the Quest 2 works with Link compared to my Rift cv1. No way my Quest 1 works as well with PCVR right now imho.  I kinda doubt it's initially going to be close but maybe after a few Link and Quest 2 tweaks it might.  Time will tell.
