Does the Oculus Rift S put strain on USB 3.0 ports? Mine failed shortly after installing new Rift S.

Hey guys,

So I bought a brand new Rift S a few days ago.

I installed it all fine on my Win 10 gaming PC and had 20-30 minutes of great first user experience of the Rift S.
Soon after, the device wasn't visible any more, so I reinstalled the Oculus software multiple times and it failed to see the device.
I then returned the device to Amazin presuming it was broken.
Unknown to me at the time was that my USB 3.0 ports seem to have failed.
I have done all I can on my system to reinstall the USB 3.0 port drivers, reflashed the PC BIOS etc.... but to no avail.

So my question here on the Oculus forum is:
Does the Rift S put a higher demand on a USB port, than other typical PC devices, which may have caused a failure in an (admittedly old) motherboard? 

I noticed online is that some people mentioned that USB 3.0 ports are 'the first thing to go' on older motherboards - mines certainly been well used in the 5+ years I've had it, but the timing with the Oculus is very strange.

Anyone with any advice/thoughts would be very much appreciated 🙂

Hmm since it's powered over usb 3 I presume it sends indeed the maximum 3 ampere over the connector. Maybe an aging port can't withstand those ampere. But it seems that the controller on your board is dying and not the port itself. Dunno how much ampere he has to handle directly when devices are plugged in. I think you're just unlucky 🙂

Update - I opened up my PC case, have unplugged and replugged all internal connectors, and I now seem to have REAR USB 3.0 ports working. But not the front USB 3.0 ports....

Thoughts still very much welcomed thanks guys, curious to know if the Rift S places additional strain (if there is such a thing) on the USB 3.0 ports.
