How I set up my New Rift S perfectly without any issues

1.      I made sure my computer BEAT minimum
specs.  I also used the  Oculus Rift Compatibility Tool to double
check.   I made sure I wasn’t thinking,
Well… this is close enough, or,  I want
it to work so maybe it will.  I MADE
SURE, no kidding, no compromise, that my system beat minimum specs. That meant
buying the suggested powered USB card with the correct chipset BEFORE I
installed my Rift S.

2.      I read every install problem post I could
find, looked for the answer and then started a list I called, How to Avoid
Install Problems.  Every little thing is
impossible to remember, and the order of it does matter.  Most problems
don’t need a solution if you avoid them with proper prep BEFORE install.  Yes, you can break your leg and then set it,
put it in a cast and have it heal just fine.
However, it sure makes life simpler to not break it in the first
place.  ORGANIZED preparation.  Also, if you read the posts, you won’t be
inclined to re-post the same issue.
You’re not gonna get a new answer for the same issue. Do your
research.

3.      Install slow.
One intentional thing at a time, exactly as instructed.  I installed the software on my C:/ M.2 drive,
and the apps on my SSD. And I never plugged in a cable, pushed a button or
clicked my mouse before I was sure I knew exactly why I was doing it.  I also (as instructed on the forums)
unplugged everything that was not essential during install.  I run 3 monitors, so I unplugged 2 of
them.   I unplugged both of my raid
drives and all my Bluetooth usb dongles. Then after everything was up and
running, I started plugging things in one at a time (close Oculus software,
plug in monitor #2, open software, test and verify, close software, repeat with
each plug).

4.      Get help.
Find some techie geek who knows more than you do and invite them over to
help trouble shoot during install.  I
bribed Joe with donuts and bacon and he came over for help/moral support.  Turns out I really didn’t need him for
install, but he’d used VR before and helped my get started playing with it and
shortened the learning curve.  Plus, the
bacon was good!

5.      Yes, I had to try a couple of different usb
outputs.  But when I switched them, I
followed instructions and always unplugged the display port and plugged them
back in the corrected order.  I ended up
only changing once – moving from my MB usb 3.1a to the 3.0 a.  I never even needed the powered USB card, so
I plugged in all my other USB cables into the card so I reserved USB power from
the motherboard for the Rift.  This I
learned from research.

6.      I updated ALL my drivers before I installed,
including bios. I did a proper measurement of my IPD before the unit arrived (60).  I wear glasses, so I bought lens protectors
and installed them before I ever put the headset on so the lenses don’t get scratched.  I bought earbuds and attached the wires to
the headset so nothing is dangling.  I
used Velcro to hold the rift S cable to the back of the headset so it hangs
down behind for better wire management and comfort.  I created a storage are near my computer  - bottom desk drawer with double pads fir room
for the wires to go through so I can leave it plugged in and the wires tucked
away and the HS safely in the drawer.
There’s 2 micro fiber cloths in the drawer and an extra set of
batteries.  I bought a rubber mask pad
cover so sweat doesn’t soak the padding and it can be shared with others
cleanly. I learned about how to maximize video quality for my specific GPU and
adjusted it first before playing a game.
On a tip, I position the headband a little higher up on the back of my
head to clear up the image and find my “sweet spot.”   I plan on lengthening the cables, so I bought
the suggested wires and a DP repeater with the correct Hz for the length I want
(actually, more than enough, which is always safer).  I read all the reviews of the stuff on
Amazon.

NONE of this did I think up on my
own.  I invested the time &
money.  Listen, VR is not yet Plug and
Play for the masses (someday, I’m sure).
And as easy as the Rift S is compared to others, every computer is
different – software and hardware.  I
have built every desk top computer I’ve ever had since 1986, so half the fun
for me is futzing around with the stuff.
But if you don’t have the computer skills to do the things required for
an easy install (or have someone who can do it for you) then most people will
just be frustrated.  I read a FB post
where a Mom bought one for her young son and couldn’t get the thing
working.  She was using a laptop with a USB-C.
She didn’t know what her GPU was. I’ve seen multiply posts where people reinstalled
windows.  Never works.  Or sent back the unit because it’s “defective.”  Same problems with the new one.

Don’t get me wrong, perfect installs
happen in most cases.  But I believe it’s,
Put in the time/money or take your chances.

But the Rift S is worth it!  It’s truly amazing.  I’ve been to the farthest reaches of space, been
on planets, experienced weightless environments, battled monsters, solved
mysteries, ridden gliders on tropical islands, rushed down mountains in a
wingsuit, free-climbed mountains, built and rode rollercoasters, taken a private
tour of Yosemite with President Obama, traveled all over our earth discovering
new places… And I’ve only had it a week!

For me, it’s worth the effort.  Tomorrow I have knee surgery, and the recover
period is going to be MUCH MORE FUN with my VR.

Thank you so much to all those who
took the time to help people with their problems so that I could avoid the
same.

I had a perfect install.

Donuts and bacon? Let me know if you need to re-install.

Dude. No one cares. It's not hard to install this thing. Come back if or when yours just stops working for no reason and post how you fixed it. That's what we are needing here.
