How do I use Steam Controller in Oculus version of Elite: Dangerous?

While traveling, I'm trying to use Steam Controller + pedals in Elite: Dangerous since I can't take my HOTAS with me. However, I can't find any way to access the official Elite Dangerous bindings I'm reading about and seeing in YouTube videos. When I go to my Steam Controller configuration, all of those lists in "browse" are empty other than templates. How do I get Elite: Dangerous to recognize my Steam Controller? I have it working in other games, so I know the controller works.

Are those other games Steam games?

Apparently, to use a Steam controller for non-Steam games, you need to add the game to Steam and start it from big picture mode. I don't know about the oculus version of elite (I use the frontier store version), but it should be possible to add a shortcut to steam (the elite executable will probably be in C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software\Software somewhere, look for a file called edlaunch.exe).
I don't know if this works for elite or oculus versions though, this is just general "non steam game with steam controller" tips from the net.

Those other ones are, yes. I did try adding the Elite client, launcher, and Oculus client to Steam as shortcuts, launched them from BPM. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work.

Hey there Rangoon,

Would you please be able to try disabling Generic Controller Support in Steams Big Picture Mode, then launch Elite Dangerous in Steam VR, and your Steam controller should then be recognised by Elite.

In the Controller Settings of Big Picture Mode, the box next to Generic Gamepad Configuration Support has been unchecked throughout this process. I assume that's what you mean?

I have tried adding shortcuts for Elite via the "Add a non-Steam game to My Library" function. I have tried that with the client, the launcher, and even Oculus Home. Nothing will allow me to browse any configs to download (such as the official Frontier config), nor allow Elite to see the controller in Controls. I can use the right touch pad as a mouse, but cannot get the gyros for example to register (as mouse) in Elite.

I had the original Frontier version, and when I bought the Rift, it required me to use the "Oculus" version through Oculus Home. Do I need to somehow launch Elite via Steam for sure to get the Steam Controller to work? Or should it be able to run via Oculus Home and still see the controller? If I need to run it via Steam VR, should I just get my license key transferred from Oculus to Steam (if that's possible?). This trick with the non-Steam shortcuts doesn't seem to be working.

If you go to the Frontier website you'll be able to get a separate Steam key. Sign in to the website, go to your Account and you'll see Partner Keys on the left which lets you get a free Steam key.

Thanks, snowdog. In the end, this is what worked. I just couldn't seem to get it to work without the actual Steam version of Elite. Now it's working fine. Boggles my mind why the Steam Controller can't operate like other controllers when it comes to drivers and software. It shouldn't need to operate within its own proprietary environment.
