Oculus Rift and the possibilities in flight simulatiom

My particular obsession, is flight simulation. Now I have to say that the first time I put the oculus rift headset on within a flight simulator the experience was extraordinary. But as is often the case once you have enjoyed the new technology on a number of occasions you begin to see that there problems as well. Problems within FS have to do, not so much with inadequate hardware – since we’ve always known that VR required a great deal of competing power, - but rather with  the oculus rift headset not always really taking advantage of much of the powerful hardware that is available in order to provide good fluid performance at a reasonable resolution.  At present Oculus points towards the most incredible possibilities . I would love to hear from a technician or anyone who really knows what they talking about as regards the technology involved in virtual reality in order to hear what the latest developmental possibilities might be, what is available at present and what might be available in the near future. I would enjoy listening to somebody talk about the difficulties that there are in presenting virtual reality in the way that  i’ve been talking about and how these might be overcome. Thanks, Neil

Sorry not a techie but like you I enjoy flight simulators in VR.  My favorite is x-plane 11.21.  I don’t own a super computer (i7 7700hq, gtx1060 6gb, 32gb ram) but I still get very good results, albeit with low scenery settings.

As an aside, disabling SPUD improved my Rift’s image quality, especially for night flights.  Google this for more info.

My main bottleneck is my cpu in that this sim’s open gl graphics system does not fully support multi core cpu’s.  Later this year xp11 is planning to move to Vulcan graphics so this may improve things significantly.  Time will tell.

The point I’m trying to make is that a lot of future VR improvements really need to be done by software developers imho.

This is more an issue of the coding of the software than the Rift itself. If you want a glimpse of what future VR flight simming can look like, with very fluid performance and crisp visuals, you need to try out AeroFly FS2. No, it's not as 'serious' a sim as X-Plane (it doesn't have ATC, no moving cars on the streets, no animated water, etc. etc.) but in graphics quality and performance it absolutely crushes the other VR flight sims right now. When I was using a 3GB GTX 1060 I could still run it with all graphics on maximum except the shadows with a solid 90 fps. You can find quite a few vids on youtube if you're curious, but here's one to get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SddS_tjeWrw

Yes I have tried this but as a sim I did not like it since it did not feel right plus moving around to a diff airport is way too difficult (you need to scroll the map).  Still, headed in the right direction and I will continue to keep an eye on it.  Thanks.
