GPU is an R9 280X. Under the system requirements I know, and it’ll be replaced by an RTX 2070 Super shortly.
Having said this, when games run, they run perfectly and I’ve had no issue playing Beat Saber, Pavlov and Subnautica.
Got a Rift S last week and had the same issue I’m having now when I first set it up. It seemed to correct itself for several days but now the issue is back.
Basically, I’ll boot up windows, plug in the headset, launch the Oculus app; wait for the prompt to say everything’s working and put my headset on.
Everything comes up fine at first, but movement of my head causes the entire image to freeze on the screen so I just have a static image. The headset proceeds to then black out following a few seconds of doing this.
Sometimes I get further and am able to do full room setup before it freezes, and several times I managed to actually launch a game.
If a game does manage to launch I’m usually able to play the game as long as I want, but when going back to Oculus Home or even clicking the Oculus or menu buttons on the controller it freezes again.
Furthermore, the entire desktop also freezes requiring a full restart of the PC to try again.
It’s interesting that it seems to be the menus that freeze when if I’m lucky enough to get into a game I don’t have issues.
I also get a message from WattMan saying there was a failure after it crashes: *Default wattman settings have been restored due to an unexpected failure*.
So perhaps, considering this message and also that my entire display on the monitor is also frozen; the GPU may be overheating or something?
I thought at first it must be USB related, as my optical mouse lost its red light despite being plugged in. This would surely indicate the issue was related to the powering down of USB that we’ve seen, but considering I have a dedicated USB 3 card that I use for the headset and that I already changed the settings to *not* power down USB in the control panel, I don’t think it’s that.
I’m pretty sure it’s GPU related but if it was I’d just expect it to flat out not work.
I know it’s an old card, but as I say the games run great when they’re working. The card I capable of playing them.
It also strikes me as odd that it did this for a day when I got it, then went to the issue being non existent and everything working perfectly, and now to its happening again.
I should add, it started again when I started to use my computer on a different display. I brought everything back to my family home for the weekend.
Has anyone had similar issues?
Many thanks.
