One of the most common problems with the sensors is lack of power. Not all motherboards put out enough on a single USB port.
Using a powered usb hub can help a lot.

A powered hub is a USB hub that has its own external power supply instead of relying on the motherboard to power everything. Having it's own power supply means it can handle more devices, but also has a better chance of supplying enough for the Rift-S.

I use this one for my Rift-S: Orico 10 port USB 3.0 Hub (ORICO-H10C1-U3-BK)
It uses a 12v 4A power supply.
Sadly it's been discontinued.
