What Options exist for watching Amazon Prime and Netflix on the Rift S?

Anonymous
Not applicable
Hi,
after a very long time I wanted to use my Rift S again - actually wanted to try how watching a movie would be. I am shocked: it seems so complicated, especially from the two streaming services: Netflix and Prime. Does anyone have a tip for me? Is it possible to load and use Quest Apps on Rift S?

No, you cannot load the Prime app from either the Quest (1 or 2) or Go.  Seems to work fine with my Rift cv1 and Virtual Desktop app (Rift store version).  I still enjoy watching it mobile with my Go and Q1 more than my cv1, esp. sitting on my comfy recliner.

Netflix and Amazon Prime have DRM so you can't use the Windows desktop applications to watch them on your Rift, it will appear as a black screen. You can workaround this by using any browser instead on corresponding web site. This is what I do to watch them in my Oculus CV1, using Oculus Dash or Virtual Desktop.
AFAIK they don't have any Oculus application for Rift and Rift S, but would like people prove I'm wrong 😉

Ya, you need to call up a browser to view.  Same as you do when using your PC.

As YoLolo69 and TomCgcmfc say, you need to use a browser on your desktop to open Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

Firefox works but Edge doesn't. Once you've got them on your desktop, you can use Oculus Home to broadcast to one of the available screens from your inventory, placed somewhere within your Home environment, or Bigscreen... or Virtual Desktop.

Each of these apps stream your desktop (or one of the windows on your desktop) to the app.

There have been a lot of people asking about this for some time so I think I'll but together a video of how Netflix and Amazon look in each of these apps using the Rift.

Ya, Prime works fine on my PC with Edge browser but only shows blackscreen on my Rift (but mirrors to my PC monitor fine.  Chrome works fine though.

While this works fine with the stock Oculus app desktop panel, I find it much nicer to watch using Virtual Desktop (version from Rift store) because you can finetune graphics settings a lot more.  Of course you need a good PC setup to take advantage of this.  I still prefer using the mobile Prime app with my Quest 1 or Go though.

I couldn't get Prime to work with Edge, are you using the new Chrome version of Edge?

Yeah I agree Virtual Desktop is probably the best for screen quality and the lack of distracting surroundings can be a boon, the Bigscreen environment is very nice though.

I've never really sat through a movie in the Rift, I find it better to just see it on the TV but the Quest is a great alternative when away from home. The Rift-S is comfortable enough to use for this though if you enjoy the virtual environments or maybe the big screen TV is being monopolised by someone else!
