iMac 27" 2019 - Rift S

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in buying the Rift S for Christmas - ideally, while it is currently £50 off, however, I can't seem to find an actual answer to this question.

Will the Rift S work on an iMac 27" 2019?

I've seen a lot of answers along the lines of "Oculus doesn't support Mac OS" or "Oculus needs a Discrete GPU" which doesn't really answer the question or the answer is relevant to a 2015 or 2017 iMac.

The iMac can run Windows, so Mac OS is irrelevant, yes there may be driver issues but that is out of the scope of the technical limitations.

My iMac runs a Radeon Pro 570X 4GB graphics card which is more than capable of handling VR gaming (I've tested using PSVR via Trinius and Steam VR).

The biggest technical limitation here is, will the Rift S work via the Thunderbolt port on the iMac (natively or via adapter)?

Thanks, everyone for your help 🙂

Good luck. The staff doesn’t reply to anyone who dares mention an iMac or Bootcamp.

No surprise there 🙂
It may work, or may not, it is a bit like asking if you can fit a Ferrari engine in a Ford...
I'd suggest buying the Rift S from a store that gives you a decent returns window and trying it out, a Thunderbolt to DP adaptor shouldn't be to much of an expense to 'waste' if it doesn't work (again if bought online you may even be able to return it 🙂 ).
