v23 PTC PC Software Release Notes

ShowbizDonkey
Retired Support
Quick note on release numbering - v22 was an internal only build, so we're jumping to v23!

Oculus Rift S

  • We resolved an issue in Oculus Dash where pinned windows would show graphic distortion across the entire pane and not be visible to the user.

Oculus Link

  • Increased encode resolution which improves visual quality while running Link.

Hi, I'm new here (and so is my very first VR headset the Quest 2 and the official Link cable I got it with), so sorry  if the following might be a noobish question.
Is all this supposed to also have an effect when playing SteamVR games such as Half-Life: Alyx? (Because I don't see any...)

I did not notice any major difference in half life alyx actually. Perhaps it is due to alyx own dynamic features. Fallout 4 vr looked really good though. These are the only two games I have tested so far.

With a little quick testing. I actually had rough stutters changing my encode bitrate from 0 to 350.  I am still testing but so far, leaving it at default gives me the best performance with comparable graphics.

I am on an i7700k with a 1080 Ti and 32 GB DDR4 running off an NVME M2 SSD.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really digging these new features and tweaks to link.  I just played Population One over Link and it was impressively much cleaner and better looking than it was playing in Quest 2 mode.  I also have Virtual Desktop and while it largely works well, Link works much better for Alyx VR over Steam.  VD was pretty slowed down feeling frame rate wise.

Edit to note I was using the Quest 1 USB2 cable that is not an actual USB3 Link cable... they just look exactly the same.  I will re-test near the end of the week when my Link cable shows up.

Every thing still looks burry to me ,things  up close look  good but  anything in the background looks blurry, don't think its compression or IPD issue , it seems more like a bug with the resolution. its like it in games and the home screen via link or native quest 2 games my quest 1 looked better 😞

It is already a known bug, encoder resolution is broken.

Virtual desktop runs at a much higher resolution than link at the moment, that could explain bad performance in half life alyx, I had to drop the resolution down quite a lot to make it playable even on a 1080ti

Regarding the debug Tool! After I restarted the oculus software and try to set prioritze quality in the settings of the headset, the oculus link is not working. When I set it as automatic the oculus rift(link) working. What do I do wrong?? I have a MSI gaming laptop with rtx 2070super...and... Half life alyx is blurry for me to!

@DaKa83 you need to restart your Oculus app if you make changes to prioritise Quest Quality.  Personally I would roll back out of beta for now and just use the current stable v21.  Then download and learn to use the free Oculus Tray Tool (OTT).  You can then use it to make some additional Quest changes without having to use the Oculus Debug Tool (ODT).  It actually works with ODT in the background.

More info on OTT is available on its forum General thread here;

I'm updating my above post as I just figured out today that I am on USB2 because I'm using the cable that came with my Quest 1 to play PCVR on my Quest 2.  I ordered an actual link cable and will see how these tweaks work with an actual USB3 connection 🙂

Halloween edit: Yeah Link cable and USB3 connection clocks in at 2.4 GB/s. Huge gain over 360 MB/s.  These tweaks work without stuttering on the actual Link Cable. Wanted to edit and update for anyone else who mixed this up with the Quest 1 cable.  Once you see the two next to each other, the Link cable is MUCH thicker and as noted, substantially faster.

So I need to unistall the software and install it again to roll back to offical version? I will try OTT!

No, you need go into your PC's Oculus Desktop app, settings, beta tab, and opt out of the beta (turn its slider off).  It will then automatically roll you back.
