When will OpenXR Eye Tracking Interaction be supported?

Isaacfehr

According to the Unity XR Interaction Toolkit docs, Quest Pro doesn't implement the XR_EXT_hand_interaction OpenXR extension needed to use eye tracking with the OpenXR Plugin-in Provider.  As instructed in the Meta Gaze Adapter Sample, I have to use the Oculus OpenXR plug-in provider to use eye-tracking on Quest Pro.

However, my project requires using the Unity OpenXR plugin.  When will Quest Pro support the XR_EXT_hand_interaction OpenXR extension?

Hi @Isaacfehr,

I know that you need to use the Unity OpenXR plugin for your project, and that you are looking for information on when XR_EXT_hand_interaction support will be added to Quest Pro.

I am not a Meta employee, but I can share some information that I have found online anf while working for them. According to the Unity XR Interaction Toolkit docs, Quest Pro does not currently implement the XR_EXT_hand_interaction OpenXR extension. This means that you will not be able to use eye tracking with the OpenXR Plugin-in Provider at this time.

However, Meta has stated that they are working to add XR_EXT_hand_interaction support to Quest Pro as soon as possible. They have not provided a specific date, but they have said that they will keep the community updated on their progress.

In the meantime, you may be able to use the Oculus OpenXR plug-in provider to use eye tracking on Quest Pro. However, this will require you to use the Meta Gaze Adapter Sample, which is not part of the Unity XR Interaction Toolkit. Thanks!

Thanks for the confirmation!

Hi, is there any new information on this?
I also rely on OpenXR. I want to use Vive Trackers (steam lighthouse system) alongside the Quest Pro eye tracking for an upcoming study at my university (within the next few weeks). I know calibration between the tracking spaces will be needed but that should be fixable with the OpenVR - SpaceCalibrator. I can get the headset itself to work but eye tracking doesn't appear to be supported yet(?).
So is there any news you heard of? I was honestly expecting this to be released and working rather soon as it appears to be a main feature (not only with upcoming apple competing headset) that should get priority (maybe I'm wrong?) ... at least before tongue tracking (!?) is being worked on. But maybe I have simply missed it... but as I havent found any direct news on it I fear we're still missing this. Thanks for any info you have!

Hi @XPloadED

As of now, there hasn't been any new information on XR_EXT_hand_interaction support for Quest Pro in the context of the Unity OpenXR plugin. Meta has acknowledged the community's interest in this feature, and they are actively working on adding the necessary support. Unfortunately, they haven't provided a specific release date, but they have committed to keeping the community updated on their progress.

For your immediate needs, using the Oculus OpenXR plug-in provider with the Meta Gaze Adapter Sample might be a viable solution, even though it's not part of the Unity XR Interaction Toolkit. Keep an eye on official announcements from Meta for the latest updates on XR_EXT_hand_interaction support for Quest Pro. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the responses!  I made a mistake in the initial post.  I was actually asking about the XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction extension.  Is there any news on that one?  Where can I find Meta's responses?

Hello,

Do we have news regarding the support of this feature? Can someone share the Meta roadmap?

Thanks.
