Meta Quest Remote Desktop.exe crashing in background

After the recent update, my cursor constantly flashes the working in the background circle. In task manager 'Meta Quest Remote Desktop.exe flashes then suspends followed by a windows problem reporting and repeat. I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it from the website and the issue started up again as soon as the install was complete. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thx, that fixed it for me. Have 3 Rift-s and a Q2.

For what it's worth I also have this issue and am uninstalling this app for now.  I see under the Windows Reliability Monitor that it's Meta Quest REmove Desktop causing the issue as others have said.  This started happening just after the big new update MS dropped.

to avoid damaging your system before completing the installation and the program launches go to the Program Files/Oculus/Support/oculus-remote-desktop folder and delete the RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe file

Hi, Jamonster123.

I did the same thing of deleting the RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe and now everything is back to normal! And ofc no errors at all.  🙂

Thanks dude!

there are still errors to check in the coming days I have this even though I am not using the headset

Simply deleting a RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe is not a fix.  It is a workaround and many people are having this issue.  What if you actually want to use remote desktop from your headset?

Did you mean to actually contribute anything to this thread? I'm providing a solution to a problem till it gets fixed properly. It's better to be able to use the headset without constant lag but without the remote desktop than not.

First, I'm responding to this:

I think this is just you as nobody else is having that happen with this issue

Second, actually YES, I do have an alternative suggestion as a WORKAROUND since neither is a "solution".  Unlike you, I won't claim they are solutions to the problem.  Only Oculus can provide an actual solution.

The version that has this issue is 1.103.0.  I recommend installing the previous 1.97.0 release that doesn't have the issue and turn off automatic updates until the problem is solved.  So far, `winget` has been the easiest way to do this:

# winget install Meta.Oculus --force --version 1.97.0

If you don't want to use winget then you can download the right version and install manually.

And while I'm at it, even if we follow your advice, DELETING the file is a bad idea.  Instead, it would be better to simply rename either the file or even the "oculus-remote-desktop" folder.  Renaming the folder to something like "oculus-remote-desktop-bad" achieves the same goal as deleting the file without being destructive.  You can undo the change by naming it back again.

It's christmas dude, just chill out 🙏, both our solutions work fine but imo mine is easier for less tech-knowledgeable people, hope you have a lovely holiday.
