Screen Brightness Issue

Hey, I have been trying to figure out exactly what has been causing a brightness issue with the rift. I noticed in dark areas in demos and scenes that I have been building in unity that the right eye is always darker. I decided to see exactly what was going on. I googled around and noticed other people complaining about the same issue, but the issue was never resolved nor pinpointed. One person mentioned that it may be an issue with the note screen being overclocked to 75hz. The same problem was apparent when I switched the rift from 75hz to 60hz, so I don't believe that it has to to with the overclock. I took a printscreen and compared the values which were exactly the same. So the issue isn't gameside. I displayed a flat value of 5,5,5 across the entire screen. What I noticed was a gradient from left to right in brightness.

This is a boosted picture from my iphone to illustrate the issue. Ignore the reflection, it's a smooth gradient.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on here, but the issue is occurring somewhere between the final image render and the pixels. I get the feeling it has something to do with the driver board because it's dimming the same direction as the raster scan, but I don't know. I would like to know if this could be fixed via a firmware update. I suppose a slight graduated tone-map could be used to combat this problem, but that would be a band-aid to the problem.

Hope this helps guys!

+1 I have this too.

It's very apparent in riftmax when using the -force-d3d11 switch, because brightness is ~50% lower compared to d3d9 mode.

I first noticed the issue today when trying out the "Beneath" demo. It was the opposite eye of the OP's though. My rift seems to be darker in the left eye and brighter in the right eye. This was confirmed in multiple dark tech demos. I even tried to rule out pupil response by turning the rift upside down and holding it to my eyes (in order to let my eyes see the opposite sides of the screen) and it swapped places (the right eye became the darker eye and the left eye brighter).

Given that it is an OLED screen and shouldn't suffer from backlight bleed or irregular lighting of any kind, I am assuming it must be a display driver issue.

I was reading a comment on the "Beneath" demo page, and someone said this: "If you experience brightness issues, you can try switching your rift to Direct mode, then back to Extended, this is a known possible issue for the Oculus SDK 0.4.2..."

This didn't seem to fix this for me, since no demos work for me with Direct mode...

I've tried Beneath today, too. For me it's the right eye which is a lot darker, almost black on some parts.

Hi all! Could you do us a quick favor? Try going into Extended Mode and look at your Desktop. Is there distortion or a brightness issue when looking at your background? If yes, please grab a picture using your phone or a camera and send it to us. 🙂

I also have this issue, ive had it since day one and assumed everyone had it. In some scenes if i close my left eye i can barely see anything its so dark when compared to the left side which is fine. Every game/app ive tried has had this issue.

Can you take a photo with something other than a black background? Meaning an image with full color?

Here you go:
1. Total black background with white dots (red 0, green 0, blue 0) - it looks fine

2. Same, but - red 10, green 10, blue 10. It looks like gauze or veil on my left eye (in dark places)

3. 0,0,0
http://u.cubeupload.com/inetusername/IMG20141118000157.jpg - ok
4. 10,10,10
http://u.cubeupload.com/inetusername/IMG20141118001915.jpg - that's it

Everything else looks fine:

Is it hardware or software issue?

OK, yes, I think I see what you are saying.

If I had to guess, I would think it's a hardware issue, but let's see if anyone here knows more.
