First day with the Gear VR S6

Hey all,

Just picked up my Gear VR for the S6 today. My last VR experience was on the DK1, so I was obviously surprised to see that the screen door effect has nearly vanished. Seeing a movie on the Oculus cinema in such great quality was incredible. The field of view is noticeably reduced, but I felt like I grew used to it after a few minutes in the headset. Overall, love the experience of being able to go "in my phone" and experience all of my movies on the big screen, as well as the videos I shoot on the phone.

I have tried searching the forum on here for just a few questions. Has anyone gotten a PS4 controller to work with the S6? I had it going for a short time, but found that the input lag was awful, making navigating nearly impossible. Will a PS3 controller work for it?

Well, my post definitely got sidetracked into a debate about screen door effect.

My updated personal opinions after having the device longer:

-Still love the tech.
-Watching movies in cinema is great, wish I had the ability to sit off center in the theater.
-Disappointed by many apps that fail to start on the S6. Some are being updated to work (Rocket Toss), but most still just turn to a black screen and crash back to Oculus home.
-Disappointed by lack of content. Feels like updates to the store are few and far between.
-Disappointed that something as great as Google Street view (which has a VR component already built in) isn't on Gear VR. One of the worlds largest databases of 360 environments maintained by Google, is not available on a Google friendly device...why?
-Disappointed that a game that is fantastic on mobile devices, Minecraft PE, isn't on Gear Vr. Talk about a huge marketing boost by making something like this available. The ability to create your own virtual environments for the lay user is just waiting to be implemented.
-Disappointed that the Google cardboard apps aren't compatible for the headset.

Seeing as how I am a VR junkie, I can't say I regret the purchase. That being said though, I don't demo the device much, too many questions of "what else can you do with it?"

I just got my Gear VR last week. Been very excited to play Dreadhalls, but very lost on what controller to get. The Samsung just seems a little too expensive at the moment. But every other controller seems to be hit or miss. The general consensus is that the Moga Pro is the way to go, but I hear horror stories of it not working with the current OS. I'm using an s6. Any help would be appreciated.

Azrael,

I have the Moga Pro and it works flawlessly for my Gear VR on the S6. Tip for you if you're going to buy it, Target carries them...but it's usually cheaper on target online. Price match it in store for a discount. Cheers.

Thanks for the tip! So you dont have any issues with it not working with current Lollipop 5.0.2? Forgive me, I just switched to the s6 after five years with an iPhone so I'm still adjusting. Thanks again.

Thanks again for the reply. I got my Moga today and it works great! Finally getting to experience Dreadhalls for myself. Needless to say, the YouTube videos do not fully convey how creepy it is lol.

Glad its working for you too. Dreadhalls is great obviously...I'd recommend trying Bombsquad VR. It has great controls with the Moga.

Yep i agree videos are awful tried a few and wouldn't try anymore but my vision is perfect thank you it just seems your not happy regardless there is nothing wrong with taking your gear vr back for a refund but I think the general view is that most people think screenddoor is much less of a problem or they choose to not let it get in the way of such early tech

Just get a refund and stop whining vr has not caught up with your expectations but for others like myself and the op were quite happy with the way oculus vr mobile has begun. Not everyone will like everything and gear vr is an innovator edition so its not consumer ready oculus cinema for me is fantastic as is titans of space, and many vr jam demoes I wouldn't be put off by your comments everyone I have trailed the gear vr to are amazed with the tech not one person has complained of screen door it just isn't that much of a big deal but for you it is so take it back and give yourself another 5 years before buying again

Don't forget to take your Gear VR off before you do.
Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3
