Is the Note 5 VR going to be that much different to S6?

With a Note 5 release expected for September (perhaps sooner in August accordinaccording to some sources) what I've been reading is it won't be much different to the S6 and gasp horror won't feature the SD card or fantasy desired 4k screen.

Any views on this folks?

System Specs: MSI NVIDIA RTX 4090 , i5 13700K CPU, 32GB DDR 4 RAM, Win 11 64 Bit OS.

It will get a fart smell sensor for S-HEalth. 😉
Ah no. Dont know. I lost any interest in the Note 5 after I read that it will still have a 2K display.

Samsung would take the display to an amazing resolution for 4K in the Note 5, and Galaxy S6 is running the 2K-resolution display, smaller size than Galaxy Note 4’s display of 2K-resolution display. If you love bigger display phones, Galaxy Note 5 belongs to you.

same here, with 4k screen it was a certain upgrade - now I'm going to hold out for the Note 6

I got the Note 4 last November because of the Gear VR. I had been perfectly happy with my S5 that I had gotten 6 months earlier.

I've had a lot of fun with the Gear VR, but it is so limited in terms of software availability, processing power and video resolution, plus the overheating issue is ridiculous. The Note 5 would have to offer a huge upgrade on these issues (not to mention an IPD adjustment) for me to even consider it.

Probably the biggest issue is that an option is soon available that will make the mobile VR seem like a view master in comparison. Even with a cable hanging off the back of my head, the PC based Rift experience is going to be in a whole other class that mobile won't reach for a decade by the looks of things.

It's been fun Samsung, but it's time for me to move on. I do like your smart phones as smart phones though. Keep up the good work.

I would say mobile VR is maybe 2 years behind desktop VR in terms of tracking and VR experience. But once inside out sub mm positional tracking and <20ms wireless cloud/PC streaming is solved, mobile VR will leapfrog desktop VR.

But maybe this won't come from Samsung/Oculus as this device would compete with the Oculus Rift and i doubt Oculus would help achieve this. Maybe that is why the Gear VR won't evolve as fast as it could be, maybe that is among the reasons why John Carmack had to stop working on inside out tracking for Gear VR aswell.

And instead of a phone the display(s) should be made specificly for the self contained wireless VR device, plus additional cameras for depth, position, body, finger tracking and such things.

I'm not sure that oculus is actively slowing gear development down... but now you say that, it wouldn't surprise me if oculus works on it's own integrated device as well, ie a 'mobile rift' with integrated cpu/gpu etc... maybe to come out at the time the rift 2 ships...

But alaz, meanwhile the gear VR... it is probably wishfull thinking, but some things i think of that might be cool...

inside out positioning, hand tracking, centered pass trough camera... even stereo this one, so maybe one centered depth sensing camera and two video camera's... that would be a bit much for a phone in the next generation, altough google project Tango points in this direction, that has a dedicated computer vision chip...

so back to remark one... though this would give oculus an even bigger advantage to work with samsung on some custom cut square screens for the next rift... if they feel the pressure of oculus doing it's own mobile dev...

- would it be far fetched to have the camera on the note 5 or S 7 centered and - some - oculus computer vision tech... i really look forward to hand tracking... it's the first thing you look for in vr...

- anyway, for the gear itself and the home software... definitely the usb pass trough should also allow data, with vr games and pano's some extra storage will be needed, and since samsung dropped the sd card... maybe even better would be to have an sd card on the gear itself, in addition to a full usb port.

- and it should be possible to do everything with the phone without taking the headset of and the phone out of the casing...

- controlling wise why not have both sides scrollpads and an extra button on the left side, giving more posibilities without gamepad.

- bigger fov, resolution etc are a given and would be welcome, but i found the resolution with the S6 already nice, i'd opt for more fov, less tunnel vision...

- and again... inside out tracking to allow leaning at least ? if it is the first consumer version it better be good... that was the strategy with the rift so... better wait till the holiday season and have it in there ...

Maybe in terms of tracking.
But not in "performance". Not so much in performance to play 360Videos, but the performance to realtime render 3D envoirements for Games or experiences.

Laptop PCs are 2 years behind Desktop PCs in terms of 3D graphics performance. But smartphones should be something like 10 years behind.

And that means, mobile VR will have to live with very low polygon numbers and simple textures in game or experience envoirements, that are realtime calculated.

to be drastic:
Mobile VR will play games looking like Viral while Desktop VR will play games looking like OTOY renders. 😉
Nothing against Viral, thats a cool game. But some people like "eyecandy" and "Eyecandy" needs top performance, that is not possible to gain in a mobile device. (or better: lags behind a stationary device many years)

If they could go Low level graphics on recent or upcoming Smartphones like Apple does with the Metal API and keep the overheating in check so that they could crank up the performance, the graphics even on mobile VR would not look bad at all. http://media.idownloadblog.com/wp-conte ... mo-002.jpg

But i was actually talking about cloud streaming or streaming a game from a PC wireless to the mobile VR unit, when they achieve tracking latancy of <20ms here aswell.

Well THAT could be a solution.
But then again...thats not really "mobile VR" anymore, is it? If you have a power horse with 4 nitrogen cooled GPUs (lol) in your "men/nerd cave" and stream the images to the mobile device.

Cloudstreaming is something I am against. Thats always more expensive. Like.... imagine people dont buy kitchens (mobile=camping stove and plastic dishes or staionary kitchen doesnt matter) anymore but outsource everything to their kitchen clouds (restaurants). Very expensive, even through the kitchen cloud can produce high quality meals (semi) "mobile" 😉

With computing power I am like an American with handguns: They need to take it from my dead cold hands.
May the goverment think, people without (own) computers are easy prey, I will get me a hoard of them before they make them illegal or before they are removed from the market.

Tanks over pistols allways (ok, give it to you, cant have a tank with me at all places)!
