I know the link to the Mobile VR Jam submissions has already been posted, but I felt a new thread with that link should be out here. Yes, somebody has also posted a link to a whole batch of the demos, but, anyway, to look at the Mobile VR Jam's submission page with all the games and experiences on it, go to the link here:
THEN JUST CLICK ON ANY DEMO AND SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THAT DEMO'S PAGE, AND CLICK ON THE LINK WHERE IT SAYS "TRY IT OUT."
The apk file for the game or experience will download to your phone, and then just click on "Install" and you will get a screen that says to put the phone into your Gear VR to play. That's it. Very straightforward. No deep digging into settings or anything, which I stupidly thought was the case earlier on. (However, just make sure your phone has been set to accept third party applications.)
I have noticed that some games don't load, probably because of the dumb lollipop update screw-up. One experience I wanted to try was the Van Gogh experience, "The Night Cafe," but even though it downloads, and installs, it just pops you back to the Gear VR Home screen after the initial "The Night Cafe" title card appears. Oh, well.
Anyway, I've tried some of the games and experiences and most seem to work very well. Maybe someone can start a thread of those that DO and DON'T work, so people will know what not to waste time on for now.
Not sure why Samsung or Oculus haven't emailed every damn owner to explain that all of these demos are available, rather than make people sit around and wait for the super slow drip of full games that have come out over the last several weeks to the actual store. My Gear VR had begun to collect dust sitting on a shelf until I found all this great stuff.
Thanks for checking and posting the results of these, Fanty. I would really appreciate a test of Fathoms Below on the S6: http://vrjam.challengepost.com/submissi ... homs-below
That one works. It also looks rather good. And no flickering. Interesting idea of moving (nodding). But I have a hard time to get this going (the swimming). I work quiet hard to make it a few meters. 🙂 Dont know if I should do this with my neck problems. But need to try again later. It looks promising to me.
Lands of Ravensword Claims to install, same issue on lollie pop been looking in all the phone dirs trying locate something to start this as it looks great.
As others have already mentioned, make sure you're running Android 4.4.4. This should have been the targeted OS release for most submissions since it was confirmed early in the competition that the judges would all have this release. UE4 submissions like ours (TightropeVR) had to make a judgement call between supporting Lollipop or using MSAA due to a last minute workaround supplied by Epic to support this necessary feature.
However, I have run into multiple instances on 4.4.4 resulting in the game launching to a black screen followed by Oculus Home. From what I could tell, this seemed to be associated with the timing between launching the side-loaded game/app, inserting it into the GearVR and placing the GearVR on the head. When I took my time, I never ran into the black screen issue. However, when I was quickly jumping between titles, I ran into it about 10-20% of the time.
Hmm. 10-20% of the time would be nice. I have this issue like with 50% of all the apps I tried so far. Black screen with right and left something written and then... the circle that starts oculus. Even if I retry 4 times in a row. I wonder if apps that run in the background can cause these kind of problems?
I run "Tasker" (automatisation App) and plugins for Tasker like AutoVoice, AutoStart, AutoLocation etc.
Would love to know if Polo: http://challengepost.com/software/polo-v663c works with the S6 and edge. I know with Lollipop you have to un-mount the SD card physically or virtually under storage settings to get it to install but haven't heard anything from someone with an S6 or Edge.
S6 has no SD card so that work around wouldn't work. Thanks for this thread, I have no internet at home, so while at work I downloaded around 15 demos to try when I got home. None of them worked (sad!). I'll try the ones you guys have been posting.
I also have an S6 and it looks like some of the devs that used Unity 5 specifically are having this issue with their builds.
According to Cybereality on this thread: viewtopic.php?t=23298, if they try downloading Unity 5.0.1p3 and rebuild their apk's then they might have a better chance of working on the S6. I'd be curious if any of the non working ones were rebuilt with this version and then worked.
