Occulus cinema questions to those who have the Gear VR for s

Hi Guys,

I am on the fence here, as i am trying to decide if i should get the gear Vr (will be updating to S6 soon) or to wait.

My main interest in the gear vr is the occulus cinema. so i have few questions to you early adopters:

1- Compared to a 1080p 50in Tv screen how good is the resolution of movies playing on the cocculus cinema? The reason i ask is i keep hearing it looks like 720p or less resoltuion. Does it not look as a clear as a bluray rip in 1080p on a led tv?

2- Does the Occulus Cinema play MKV files or do i have to rencode it before playing them?

3- Can you watch a 3 hour movie on the gear vr for S6 without the overheating message?

4- Does the occulus cinema plays SBS MKV files right away or do you need a rencode?

5- Does Occulus cinema plays MKV files with DTS and AC3 audio ?
Thank you so much guys!

Really haven't had time to put my own rips on there yet, but the demo's, trailers from big companies such as Dreamworks look "very good".

Now, i'd say DVD quality with a little fuzz added.

Let me tell you - i'm impressed, but if you're a blu ray guy and you love your films, i'm not sure.

The technology and the wonder of the surroundings is enough for me though.

It's not a fair comparison really. A 1080p tv from a good distance vs a screen being magnified right in front of your eyes. You're going to see pixels in the Gear. It seems to be case by case as to whether the pixels are a deal breaker. For some, it's unbearable and they can't see past them and for others, they're able to overlook them and enjoy the experience. It's hard to say which one you are until you try it for yourself. Maybe see if you can find a demo in your area at a Best Buy or a friend. Barring that, I say since you're getting an S6, you might as well pick one up and try it out for a few days. You can take it back if you decide it's not for you.

As to the 3 hour thing...I've never tried it, but after 90 minutes I'm very ready to get that thing off my face. I can watch a 90 minute without heating issues though.

It;s been a while and now I've forgotten which files are supported. I'm pretty sure the only audio file you can use is AAC.

Oculus Cinema is both an impressive and immersive experience but it has its drawbacks.

The resolution is no where near as crisp as 1080p resolution. I'd say that it feels somewhere between DVD and 720p resolution with a noticeable screen door/pixelation effect thrown in.

The most impressive videos I have watched have actually been my own videos filmed on the Galaxy S6.

I haven't tried .MKV's, but 3D mp4's work flawlessly for me.

IMO, as someone who struggles to comfortably watch low resolution films/TV shows, the technology is not quite there for those wanting a full HD VR experience.

I think that in a couple of years time when the technology has caught up to conventional 1080p screens (when we have at least 1080p per eye, increased FoV and no more SDE) the VR experience will be truly incredible.

Yes a 2D 720p mkv/mp4 video or a 3D 1080p video relates to around 360p-480p resolution in Oculus Cinema but it still easily trumps my 1080p 50" TV, as the feeling of watching it on a huge cinema screen or on the moon or from the point of view of an ant, is alot more immersive.

To get 720p in Oculus CInema you need atleast a 4K display, for 1080p maybe a 8K display.

It´s something in between 720 and 480. And you can see pixels like on old tube-tvs, but it is possible to watch movies without pain in the eyes... 😄

I am finding the Cinema is the most used app I have.

You can deffo watch and enjoy a 1080p video without some of the doom sayers in here and their complaints complaints about quality.

Remember when going into this, it's new tech, it will evolve and get better 🙂
