Occulus cinema questions to those who have the Gear VR for s

Hi Guys,

I am on the fence here, as i am trying to decide if i should get the gear Vr (will be updating to S6 soon) or to wait.

My main interest in the gear vr is the occulus cinema. so i have few questions to you early adopters:

1- Compared to a 1080p 50in Tv screen how good is the resolution of movies playing on the cocculus cinema? The reason i ask is i keep hearing it looks like 720p or less resoltuion. Does it not look as a clear as a bluray rip in 1080p on a led tv?

2- Does the Occulus Cinema play MKV files or do i have to rencode it before playing them?

3- Can you watch a 3 hour movie on the gear vr for S6 without the overheating message?

4- Does the occulus cinema plays SBS MKV files right away or do you need a rencode?

5- Does Occulus cinema plays MKV files with DTS and AC3 audio ?
Thank you so much guys!

Got the following from Samsung's site:
MICROSD cards that are under 32GB should be formatted as FAT32. Cards that are 32GB and above must be formatted as exFAT. Whenever possible format your card on the device itself, not using a PC utility.

FAT32 will not allow storage locations larger than 32GB and file sizes larger than 4GB exFAT is more susceptible to corruption if randomly disconnected or removed from the device.

The thing is, the S6 doesn't have a microSD card slot. We're talking about a direct connection to a PC. I have updated the USB drivers from Samsung's site, but the behavior has not changed. I gotta be missing something here, especially if others are saying their S6 Edges can transfer more than 4GB. Maybe I have to reset the phone...?

Very strange. On my home PC (Win8.1) it doesn't work. Neither does it work with Android File Transfer (Mac).

But my work laptop (Win7)? I can transfer over 4GB without any issues.

I'm using WinXP, so Win8.1 is probably the reason.

I had a problem when trying to transfer large .mkv files over with my 64GB S6 using usb cable connected directly to win 8.1 pc. Whenever I would try to copy and paste a file it would crash windows explorer. But when I renamed the video file from .mkv to .avi it transfered over without any problems.

Yep, and I think that was the culprit. On the Mac, Android File Transfer has a 4GB limit. Can't get around that.

But on my PC, the test file I was using was an 8GB CAB file. When I changed the extension to .tmp, it transferred fine. Then I uploaded a 5GB MP4 video and that worked as well.

Problem solved, but it's interesting that certain file types are taboo.

I don't know if it is 720p but i am pretty sure that it supports MKV format. VR device nowadays can't avoid the problem of overheating. If you have converted your 3D Blu-ray movies to SBS/TB 3D MP4/MKV, what you need to do then is to put your file to microSD card and then pair up with your Gear VR. You can enjoy your 3D Movies with brilliant immersive viewing xnperience by Oculus Cinema.

No harm no foul really on no FAT32 files greater than 4GB for Gear VR, since best really to encode at 720p- a much better resource fit for the split content on the Gear VR that is actually some less than 720p.

SDE is significantly less on the S6 than the N4 version. You trade off some FOV, but for movies IMO it is a good trade-off. Since I already have the Note 4, I went the much cheaper route and bought a generic Teefan set and use it for movies. I prefer it over the Note 4 Gear VR. No more front row-like turning some side to side to see the entire movie and trying to mentally filter out the SDE. I can also read subtitles more easily (for ones with smallish fonts).

Oculus supports MKV, but picky on some audio codecs. A bonus though is Oculus plays M4V files that are usually less than 2GB files, but usually very efficient 720p video that looks very good.
