Occulus cinema questions to those who have the Gear VR for s

Hi Guys,

I am on the fence here, as i am trying to decide if i should get the gear Vr (will be updating to S6 soon) or to wait.

My main interest in the gear vr is the occulus cinema. so i have few questions to you early adopters:

1- Compared to a 1080p 50in Tv screen how good is the resolution of movies playing on the cocculus cinema? The reason i ask is i keep hearing it looks like 720p or less resoltuion. Does it not look as a clear as a bluray rip in 1080p on a led tv?

2- Does the Occulus Cinema play MKV files or do i have to rencode it before playing them?

3- Can you watch a 3 hour movie on the gear vr for S6 without the overheating message?

4- Does the occulus cinema plays SBS MKV files right away or do you need a rencode?

5- Does Occulus cinema plays MKV files with DTS and AC3 audio ?
Thank you so much guys!

I just watched guardians of the galaxy in 3d over the weekend and I have to say it was easily the best movie experience of my life. This was a 14GB 3d 1080p file which I think makes a huge difference. I tried a 2GB 3d video and it looked like crap, so make sure you have a decent quality file.

My impressions:

It makes my 60 inch TV look so tiny, the virtual screen is HUGE. Probably bigger than most normal cinemas. I'd recommend only using the full cinema screen, the others are either too small or too close.

I'd say if you are using the full cinema, you are probably getting about 720p worth of detail as it takes up the full horizontal FOV.

The 3d effects look so much better than at the cinema, some of the scenes actually made me flinch.

Yes you can easily see the pixels but I quickly forgot about them. It's like looking through a superfine mosquito net. If the source quality is high, it still looks impressive.

The edges of the screen are very blurry. You will have to move your whole head to follow the action rather than just your eyes - this is probably the worst thing about the gear vr.

The headset gets quite heavy - I normally watch in sessions of about 40 mins. I watched the last game of thrones episode in one go and I was definitely ready to take the headset off.

The current cinema doesn't work with dts or ac3. FFMPEG solves this but it's still annoying.

I've never had any overheating message and the fan does a good job of keeping the screen clear - the only fogging I got was after a shower.

SBS works out of the box but you will almost certainly have to convert the audio.

If you are getting the s6 anyway, the gear vr is a no-brainer. If you are planning to buy the s6 just for the gear vr, I'd wait until the consumer oculus rift if you can.

That sounds awesome! This was using the Gear VR with a Galaxy S6? How were you able to watch a 14GB video in Cinema? I thought I would be confined to the local storage of the phone (only 4GB).

The s6 comes with storage up to 128gb.

Yes, I have the 64GB version. What I mean is that, when I try to transfer files over, I'm hit with a 4GB max file size limit.

Oh that's strange. I wasn't aware of a limitation like that. Seems odd.

I'm happy to know that this limitation I'm seeing isn't normal; however I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I'm using MTP when I connect, but no luck on PC and on a Mac, Android File Transfer tells me it has a 4GB limit.

I'm glad i read this discussion before i go transferring films on to my S6.

Here, i went looking and found this:

I agree with other people - the trailers are absolutely amazing, therefore i'm assuming that if you can get a film on your phone that is good enough quality you'll be fine. As for the experience, i don't think it can be beaten.
Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3

1. No it does not compare to a 1080p blu-ray in any way. The experience is still great though, but it is like watching one of those old portable dvd-players in terms of SDE. If you want a great experience then wait for the Note 5 with a 4K panel (going look more like 720p instead of the <480p we have right now).

Got the following from Samsung's site:
MICROSD cards that are under 32GB should be formatted as FAT32. Cards that are 32GB and above must be formatted as exFAT. Whenever possible format your card on the device itself, not using a PC utility.

FAT32 will not allow storage locations larger than 32GB and file sizes larger than 4GB exFAT is more susceptible to corruption if randomly disconnected or removed from the device.

Always turn your device off before removing your microSD card or unmount properly from Settings> Storage> Unmount.
