Hi,
I'm a US developer that's currently spending the next couple months in Taiwan.
I have a brand new S6-G9208 running Android 5.0.2 (LRX22G.G9208ZTU1AOCI) out of the box.
I also have an Gear VR S6 Innovator Edition that a friend just brought over.
Plugging it into the GearVR gives me the message:
"To start enjoying the Gear VR, you need to update your device."
Running Software Update says:
"The latest updates have already been installed."
This happens if I am running via VPN (so far I've used TunnelBear and Better Internet) w/ a US-based IP.
Anyone know how this works? I know that I need to get some additional GearVR software installed...
Do I also need a different firmware?

Last month. It turns out that it's good that I'm running 5.0.2 though.
I found an earlier thread here discussing issues:

What I ended up doing is:
* Used PingPongRoot to root my S6:

* Used ES File Explorer to edit /system/build.prop

... ndroid.pop
* Modified ro.product.model=SM-G9208 to ro.product.model=SM-G920T
After rebooting then I was able to get past that screen and am installing the GearVR software.
