Samsung Gear VR vs Oculus DK2/Rift

I got my Gear VR very recently and I'm completely sold to the idea now. I have used Google Cardboard replicas before but the experience was far below Gear VR. The only thing that disappointed me is the pixelation. For now, I can live with it but I was wondering if Oculus DK2 or the Rift is way better than this ? The Samsung Gear VR seems to have higher resolution. Is there anybody here who owns both of these amazing kits and can let us know if it's worth upgrading to DK2 in terms of quality of view (I know I can probably get much more content with DK2 and my usual PC games too, but I'm not asking based on the content).

I'm curious on the lenses being used on the rift consumer edition vs the gear vr. Anyone know if the lenses are better with a larger FOV with the new rift?

I would guess that the FOV on the Consumer Rift would definitely be better than the GearVR (Considering that even the DK2's FOV is larger)

Its really great to know that we're using the best VR experience there is in the market! Thanks a lot guys for such prompt responses. Now I can play in Peace! 😄 😄

Which phone are you using Boggart?

Hey Andyring! Sorry for the delay in response, I'm using Galaxy S6 Edge+ for my Gear VR. I just hope I'm not missing on any wider screen display (N5) due to edge screen.

Apples and oranges IMO.

The lack of positional tracking, the limited time you can use it before it has to cool down and/or recharge and the lack of controller options mean the Gear VR just trails behind the PC alternatives. As a portable VR solution, it's simply unmatched at the moment, and I don't regret getting it or the S6 to go with it. But the Rift & Vive will just be a in a different league for more immersive gaming.

Frankly, not being able to play the games I want on the DK2 at the moment, between the rock of the 0.7 SDK forced direct mode and the hard place of Windows 10 compatibility, means it's basically a brick right now. If you want some fast, clean VR fun, the Gear VR is currently superior to the DK2, because it's working as intended, as are its games.

I'm definitely not getting the Dev Kit, I was actually hoping if the DK2 is better, so would the Rift be. I'm also looking into Sony's Morpheus. If the quality is similar to Rift, atleast we can use our existing console for playing (if that's in their plan) instead of buying a $1000 PC. I just bought a $1250 notebook and I really doubt I'll investing so much atleast in next quarter.

A console is definately (far) inferior to (Desktop) PCs (of course thats why its so much cheaper)

And for Desktop PC versus Laptop PC, you need to double the price.

500$ Desktop PC = more or less 1000$ Laptop PC
1000$ Desktop PC = more or less 2000$ Laptop PC (the GPU will still be inferior to that in a 1000$ Desktop)
1500$ Desktop PC = no Laptop on the market can reach that performance

Thats like a 500-600$ Desktop PC.

Its just double price for the sake of beeing "mobile". (and even that is a "Lie" because "Mobile" means... "On battery". Typical "Gaming Laptops" cant play any games "on battery" at all. "On Battery" the CPU runs on 50% speed and the GPU on 5% of the speed it has if its not running on battery.

So its twice the money, for beeing able to swirftly put all the shit in a bag, go to your friend and get it ready there in 5 minutes, without running back to your cars booty 3 times. Ok... But... how often do you really need your computer at your friends house. Thats what one has to think about.

Advice: NEVER buy a Laptop if it beeing "Mobile" is not fundamental for your needs.

Also, because of the higher temperature, the chips (actually the material) will age 4 times as fast as a desktop mashine.
So think of 4 years old Laptop is as toasted/weary as 16 years old desktop.

Atleast every game works flawlessly without upgrades! Besides, when I said console I meant using the one I already have instead of investing on a new set of hardware!

Thanks for the enlightenment! Although I know its nowhere near a high end PC performance, I'm pretty happy with it for now!

Everybody knows PCs are best, atleast most of us do. The sole reason behind getting a laptop is convenience! Let's not mix it up with performance! To each his own!
