It seems you cannot ask your friend to get a new set of gearvr from samsung? Is the 360 cameras and gearsvr devices now designated as paperweight? Either there should be a statement on future releases or an official shut down of moble vr. This limbo creates zero trust toward vendors. What say you John Carmack?
If you want good mobile VR maybe look at the Oculus Go or Quest. The Oculus Go (which I do have) may be better than the gear anyway. Don't know for sure since I've never tried a Gear, or ever owned a Samsung phone, just iPhones.

Mirage Solo is an involved process, which includes having to put the device into developer mode, enabling/installing ADB (Android Device Bridge) on the device and on the PC connected and running a command to install an app to the device. So while it is possible, it requires a bunch of steps.
According to a report from VR enthusiast Antony Vitillo’s blog The Ghost Howls, Xiaomi laid off the entire Mi VR/Go development team, consisting of a dozen employees who would otherwise have been responsible for maintaining and evolving the platform.
What I heard from an Oculus employee during GDC: there will not be an Oculus Go 2. There were never plans for Go 2. It was meant to be a landing place for GearVR customers. The Oculus Quest series is the future of Oculus Go.
