What Questions Do You Have For Team Oculus On Samsung Gear?

Hi Everyone,

I managed to get an audience with developers of the Oculus Gear VR for the Newspaper I work with...any and all questions welcome.

Let me know what you all want to ask!

🙂

I'm leaning towards asking a lot of Cinema VR questions...so hopefully people can give me more creative questions to ask

Because the headtracking experience and drift with these cardboard apps is terrible and you need VR legs to stomach it.
The devs should rather make these cardboard apps compatible to Gear VR to use its faster sensors and make the experience a pleasure.

I personally think that unless a post fits what Oculus/Samsung teams envision for the product, they could care less. Case in point, we are probably never ever going to see a web browser app that would allow users to stream what they want, or browse the web. A simple 2D web browser would suffice for most users, but will likely never happen.

A web browser with cookie, java and full HTML5 support is all we really need, since can then stream Youtube, Dailymotion, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. One normal stock web app is all it would take.

Fulldive Cardboard app though is an example of how to do a web app wrong: Streaming video does not work, no cookie or java support and the UI wastes precious space that could be used for actual content. Cmoar is one of the few apps that comes close to getting a UI right for users and not waste space.

The Cardboard magnet UI is clunky and amazes me how they created a home function that requires a 90 degree tilt. Nuts. This is the Cardboard devs fault though and not Fulldive.

This - especially if there was simple support for the YouTube 360 videos.

Cool 🙂 All I want is a stock web browser that supports cookies, java and streaming video. Then no need for any streaming app since can use the browser 🙂 Simple!

We do not need a 3D browser for that, so no need for some complex integration. Simply add a stock browser with a pop up display keyboard and voice input options. Cmoar Cinema app does both inputs and work better than expected.

hey everyone,

I found this post just now where they actually provided a lot more details to the journalist than me for a few things. But I have some answers to questions he doesn't! 🙂

Exclusive Interview With Oculus on The Future of The Samsung Gear VR Interview dated June 30th, 2015! 😮 🙂 so it's super recent.

My q's for Matt Hooper - Director of Development at Oculus VR via corporate communications

Are you all going to release a web browser for the oculus gear vr?

we looked into it, but due to some partner negotiations, it will not be something that we are intending to release for the Gear VR anytime soon.

Why wont you let us run cardboard apps?

our priority is Oculus Apps first and foremost and being able to deliver a consistent experience not about what can happen with Google Cardboard apps, or potentially opening up a risk factor allowing Cardboard apps to be used for our consumers. It is also a liability issue for us in addition to something we aren't looking into seriously doing at all.

Any plan to enable Gear VR users to grab apps from Oculus Share? Or any work on a Gear VR Share?

it's not something we are planning

Any plans on a virtual world or local multiplayer between devices?

none whatsoever. We are trying to focus on the platform and hardware first and foremost before we can even consider making a virtual reality application of this nature for multiplayer type things. It's not in our timeframe

Hope this helps everyone!!

That is the verbose way of saying, "Hell no". We will NOT see a web browser on Gear VR. At least not officially.
