Why doesn't my phone charge when connected to Gear VR

Hi, I'm puzzled, I'm sure I read that if I connected a phone charging cable to my Gear VR headset that this would continue to charge my phone, but watching a movie this evening I started getting notifications about the phone's battery being at 15 then 10 and then 5 %. Can anyone enlighten me?
