So I've always loved watching stereo video, both 360 and 180 - I kind of agree with the current thinking that 180 might be the best format most of the time.
I wish computer-generated images had continued at great pace from the old Gear VR "Render the Metaverse" days - they were fantastic.
So currently there seems to be new interest because of the Apple Vision Pro and as we saw yesterday, the new iPhone which can record "spatial videos". Will other phone-makers follow suit? That would be great news!
Does anybody know what file format the iPhone will produce?
Do we believe the videos will work on any headset?
Should Meta create / dust off a 3D photo viewing app?

Yep, certainly looks that way - having AI these days though - could mean anything.

I remember when HD was stck on everything by the marketting wanks, even makeup... no idea what that was about! I bet they're looking at AI the same way, although nobody's quite sure if it's a good or bad thing... and we won't find out until we know what Cyberdyne does with it.
Just saw an AI version of Pictionary, you draw and AI has to guess what it is, looks pretty neat. Anyway, I digress!

If I were to guess, AI could be used to help take care of any flaws that come from stitching images together to make the 360 media. Most of these cameras use stitching to present the 360 image/video, and it isn't always perfect. AI could be used to perfect it?

Yeah that’s definitely a thing. Difficult to say where AI begins and traditional non AI programming ends.
Could also be object recognition. Cameras increasingly using that for their autofocus, although thinking about it, 360 cameras are fixed focus as far as I’m aware so maybe not.
Edit: looks like the AI refers to their Shot Labs editing software, which can do some fun effects with various templates.

Booo, what a let-down. Not stereo, not 360. Just an action cam.

mmm I wonder if there's more to come, the X4 is still due according to the rumours.
Edit: ok maybe not due, if the release internals X, X2 and X3 were 2 years apart, another year to wait 😐

Looks like we're about to get an Insta360 One X4 with 8K 360 video (flat). This should mean good quality 360 video for the masses.

Just going to add a couple of updates on this topic - things are looking up! Acer are showing off an upcoming camera and some 3d screens. The camera (think they're saying £550) will do 4 and 8K SBS video - not 180 degree but more like the iphone, standard size and aspect ratio.

The Insta360 X4 seems pretty cool. Watching a review, the detail and colour is better than the X3.
Shame I bought the X3 for $799au just last year. The X4 is $879 here. I don't really like selling things I buy, but maybe my college can use the X3.
The Spatial Camera would drive me crazy with it's offset tripod mount. 🙂
I wish canon would hurry up with their folding 180 / 360 camera that they keep showing at conventions, but have no release date.

I think for now 'll stick with a cheaper method or recording 4K stereo SBS video on the Quest 3
