So I've always loved watching stereo video, both 360 and 180 - I kind of agree with the current thinking that 180 might be the best format most of the time.
I wish computer-generated images had continued at great pace from the old Gear VR "Render the Metaverse" days - they were fantastic.
So currently there seems to be new interest because of the Apple Vision Pro and as we saw yesterday, the new iPhone which can record "spatial videos". Will other phone-makers follow suit? That would be great news!
Does anybody know what file format the iPhone will produce?
Do we believe the videos will work on any headset?
Should Meta create / dust off a 3D photo viewing app?

If Meta could just release 3D recording support for the Meta Quest 3.
All the hardware is already present. It's just a matter of making the app.
It would create an instantaneous significant pool of 3D footage creators for their own ecosystem.

@chris.o.yul until they do you'll have to use the ADB command or the 'Ocular Migraine' app on sidequest

Agree 100%. This should be an option when you go to the Camera app. It's crazy that you have to jump through (small) hoops to record in 3D.
I posted about it sometime last year:

I think I also posted it in the Ideas section?

If I did get an Insta360 X4, I could always make a rig that mounts the X3 and X4 64mm apart and then run them in single lens 180 mode. 🙂
Although the X4 is longer than the X3, which makes that a little bit trickier to align.

Apple have over 5000 patents for the Vision Pro. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a few in there about recording stereo video from a headset, which could block Meta from implementing it too.

New Canon stereo lens.

Still an RF mount though. I have an EF mount (5D Mark III) and EF-S mount (450D). There are adapters for using EF and EF-S lenses on an RF camera, but no adapter can mount RF lenses on an EF or EF-S camera. 😞
It's a 144 degree stereo lens with 60mm IPD. Shame it doesn't use 64mm (the average human IPD).

That's a wild idea! I need to see it.

That would be a devious, crappy thing of them to do. You're probably right 🤣

With regards the video below - the summary is that the 3D is very good but the software is awful - getting videos off, connecting the device to other devices etc.
Yeah, so confused that some of these camera manufacturers are doing IPDs that aren't average.
The xreal Beam Pro is the size of an iphone and they have put 2 lenses about 30mm apart when they could have easily (says me! lol) done 65mm

Remember that Apple got a design patent on rectangular electronic devices with round corners, then took Samsung to court for making a phone with round corners and won a billion dollars.
They love patenting things, not just as a defense but to attack other companies doing similar things.
