My first topic and I apologise if it's already been created here before. I can't seem to find a straight answer. So I will risk your wrath and straight out ask you all for your advice /experience.
What is the status of AMD GPU compatibility? I have a reasonably high end AMD HD7970 Matrix Platinum ROG GPU and from what I can tell a lot of people are having issues with AMD cards in general, it was a relatively large out lay to prepare for my DK2 which is due to arrive shortly, so please tell me I am OK to go with this set up?.
Basically, could some one please clarify this matter here are the rest of my specs:
> Intel i5 3570K > Asus Sabertooth Z77 ROG Edition > Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum ROG Edition 3GB VRam > G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL > Samsung 830 series 256GB > Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST1000DM003, 1TB > Cooler Master HAF X > Corsair Hydro H100i > Corsair Professional Gold AX850 > Samsung SH-224BB Black
Looking forward to your reactions and advice, cheers AussieStig
Well, it would be lovely for somebody to "clarify" this kind of thing, but all we on the forum can do is post our experiences.
I have a Core i5 processor and AMD 7770 GPU and some demos seem to work fine, some just flat out won't work.
Now, i'm positive that a hell of a lot of testing was done by Oculus, hopefully with a wide range of hardware - would be great if they pass on their findings to everybody else.
i have the 7970 also, and not seen anything about any problems with the rift, hope there is none.
when you spend £300 on a new gfx card and £280 on a rift you would expect them to be compatible. If they was not then you would expect Oculus to list non compatible hardware, so you do not waste time and money ordering a rift for it to sit in its box.
I would expect a common gfx card to be compatible with the Rift like a AMD/ATI
who knows ?
come on! must be peeps on here with the Rift and a AMD card...
I appreciate your reply, why is this such a vague area? It seems to me to be a very important factor to know if AMD in general is compatible. I can't imagine that the developers / testers of the rift have only tested on Nvidia GPU's. That wouldn't make much sense as not every potential developer will share the same hardware specs. So I am hoping that this won't be an issue come the delivery of my DK2 kit.
I hope this question will be cleared up once and for all, because there shouldn't be any reason that a title works on one GPU and not another. They are performing the same function, which, is displaying graphics. It just seems so elementary to expect an Oculus Rift to work with any reasonable brand of GPU. I mean what will Oculus do when they release the CV1? Will they say it only runs on Nvidia GPU's?
I think Kairo also had or has an issue with AMD cards, a quick google on the rift black screen will show various problems, maybe not all AMD related though.
I just ordered a 780ti only yesterday, a safe bet I think.
