Acer Cancelled VR Headset Plans

According to RTVR:
....the company may be more broadly shifting priority away from VR

A real shame, after their involvement with OSVR, then StarVR and now the OjO and the mess that was their WinMR system - wow what a wild ride, lets hope their AR projects do better.

Just read that article too, maybe they did not want to compete with Reverb for the probably very limited market for ultra high-res hmds... I'd like better res too, but not before new and much more powerful gpus arrive - or foveated rendering that really works by reducing gpu load.

I think this could have competed well with the HP Reverb and I for one am pretty pished off it's being shelved. I'm still hoping HP will improve upon the HP Reverb with added camera's and a better cable. I was looking at this acer VR headset to replace my HP Reverb, but VR is just becoming one big nightmare after another with all these crappy announcements.

Can we have some good news for VR to lighten the way soon? 😄

@RuneSR2 - 2k per eye on a Geforce 1080ti and 2080ti is fine.

Well, another WMR headset hits the dust, what a surprise, lol!

Looks like the only new WMR headsets you can now buy are Samsung O+ and HP Reverb.  Samsung appears to be liquidating O+ stock by dropping their price down to $230 so they probably will not be in the WMR game for much longer.  Pretty doubtful that Microsoft is going to support HP on its own for long imho.
i9 13900K water cooled, RTX4090, Z790 MB w/wifi6e, 32Gb 6400 ram, 2x2TB SSD, 1000W PSU, Win 11, QPro, Q3, w/Link and Air Link, Vive Pro1 with Etsy lens mod and Index Controllers

Doesn't really matter if Microsoft supports it as long as Steam VR still supports it. I haven't purchased one thing from the Microsoft VR store. I also hear there are some big improvements to WMR in a coming update for Windows 10, so it's not even bad news from Microsoft just yet.

Although SteamVR doesn't support WMR directly, it relies on the Microsoft support, the same as SteamVR uses the Oculus SDK to do Oculus support.

Well, unfortunately WMR headsets do not run on SteamVR alone.  They need SteamVR for WMR plus WMR itself.

Anyway, I'm just giving you Reverb guys a bit of stick so please don't take it to heart.  I'm sure your WMR headsets will be supported for a long time to come.  Cheers.

So any idea's what the next Samsung VR headset is going to use? Maybe native Steam VR or something of their own making? Samsung is the next VR headset I have my eye on. I just hope it doesn't fail to deliver like the most of the others have this time around.

Actually, it's a good thing. A new-born market does not need to be fractured between so many competitors, especially when so many of them are just dipping their toes into it. In fact, it only hurt the market, because all those people who supported the bad competitors just threw money out in the void.
The only ones who are serious about VR are Oculus, HTC and Valve. Anyone else can just get out of the fight.

Totally agree, it was a major error of judgement to have purposefully created a fractured market with ecosystems and walled gardens. The original promise of a open-landscape sharing information was that element that sold Valve into sharing so much of their research and helping support the Kickstarter. Now we have to wait on normalcy to evolve and the market to return to a true level rather than an artificially tilted business model.

I have to disagree slightly - I think Sony and Samsung are serious. I could also go as far as to to add Varjo, VRgineers, Pimax, Deepon, 3Eyes and Lenovo to that list. I know some of those are Asian names you will not be familiar with, but just a glance at the Steam survey will show the importance of the Asian player base.

We have to face the facts that the "PC-Masterrace" mentality that overtook the hyperbole of the initial launch of this phase of VR, was badly handled and misguided. Building an ecosystem rather than growing a community was a lost opportunity, and its interesting to consider since the success of mobileVR back in 2016, it has taken this long to build on the next phase - with wasted time on infighting, private empires and bridge burning!
