Yeah, if you're really serious about VR you're probably going to have to sell some of your workstation hardware and get gaming hardware. Unless you don't need to deal with realtime rendering applications, you kind of need a gaming PC for use with a game engine in addition to a workstation for highly-demanding rendering. Luckily VR can't handle huge levels of complexity right now, so that shouldn't be an issue and you should be able to get some very solid gaming hardware with the money you make off selling what you've got. In addition to getting rid of the K4000, you' might also have to swap out the Xeon for an i5 or i7, but I'm not really a hardware expert.

Yea, I didn't see the Xeon processor, eyes must of glazed over it. Was this a "hand-me-down" from someone involved in non-realtime rendering? Just curious, as the build screams to me as an animation/rendering machine and not a game-developing platform.

At this point, not to burst your bubble or anything, but yea, it looks like you will want, eventually, a new gaming rig (I5 / 970, 12gb RAM at the minimum). I didn't check the socket for that processor, so you may want to see if all you need is a processor/gpu, but tbh, at that price point, you're almost better off getting a new machine.

However! You can always develop on that machine while you save up for a better one, but be very expectant that you will not be getting the frame rates you would otherwise be seeing, and this can very well impact your art/asset/gameplay development.
Current WIPs using Unreal Engine 4: Agrona - Tales of an Era: Medieval Fantasy MORPG

Oh, if you want to wet your toes in VR, Cardboard and Unity 5 is the way to go, for sure. Having a less demanding hardware at first for prototyping towards (smartphone) will pay off in terms of smart decisions later. You might not believe it, but on the go, up to 2 weeks ago I was using an EeePC 901e (Win XP, Intel Atom 1.2Ghz with 2 Gb RAM and 9" screen with a huge aftermarket battery) with Unity 4 and Cardboard plugin. That worked quite well, actually, for prototyping and scripting stuff around.

Yup, allows you to develop for Cardboard in Unity:

UE4???
will it work with that

Not that plug-in, no, I don't think UE4 officially supports development for cardboard, but that may have changed or there may be third-party software for that.

An option you should consider 😄

New VR glasses available from Kmart for $15 - works with Google Cardboard - Ausdroid

Do not spend money on the DK2. That's a lot of money for someone your age. Instead save your money, and keep saving!

In a few months time (you'll still be 13 probably) the CV1 will be released. Buy that!

Or maybe even GearVR when it's released as a consumer product, wait until late September from Oculus Connect announcements about that.

Then there's Vive.

So, have patience 🙂 although telling a 13 yearold to have patience is quite useless
