This looks pretty cool too! Check the video and see what it can do...

Lots of info in the Reddit thread...

Hi Reddit,

long time lurker, first time poster here. I'm Tobias Baumann, an indie game developer from Switzerland and in the last 1.5 months I've been in Beijing doing R&D with PERCEPTION NEURON. I did most of the gameplay prototypes and I also did a lot of research on how to use this technology in video games. I will write a longer blog post about it later but let me summaries the important things:

•Using finger motion tracking is one of the coolest, most intuitive ways to interact in the virtual world. However it is also very challenging to develop good experience for it because of the lack of tactical feedback.

•I believe there will be a huge application field for upper-body tracking in combination with VR. Not just for games but also for other applications.

•Using full body poses more challenges as it requires more space to move around in and if your using it with VR there is the additional challenge of how to prevent players from running into physical walls. Using a treadmill system could solve some of these but still doesn't provide a complete freedom of movement.

•Using a system like PERCEPTION NEURON is the perfect fit for real-time virtual reality interaction. You can use it without an HMD but then the interaction gets more difficult because of the lack of depth.

•Using it for none real-time interaction is a lot easier as this is an already established field. The difference now is that its affordable. So everyone can buy and use it for their own motion capture and animation ideas.

Using motion capture like this for real-time game interaction is still a very unexplored territory. I'm looking very forward to exploring the possibilities and tackling the challenges of PERCEPTION NEURON with all of you.

Noitom (the company developing PERCEPTION NEURON) will be at SIGGRAPH. So if you're around I highly recommend to go check out their booth #533. They will demo the system there and you can try it out yourself by playing some of the demos I made.

I'll be around here for a while trying to answer some of the questions to the best of my knowledge.

EDIT: made some typos 🙂
But... but... but... I just NEED to know about the Baba! The Baba has me hypmotized!

Looks very interesting, I can't wait for the next couple of years to see what else people come up with and what people well combine to make their ultimate vr experience. For instance using this along with the Oculus Rift, Cyberith Virtualizer and a KOR-FX Gaming Vest. Seems like we keep getting one step closer to a complete immersion experience

looks more polished than Control VR...very tempted to back this...need to find out how their mocap data works...

It looks awesome, but due to my ignorance in that aspect i could overlook important flaws in it, still it looks really good, even better than control VR, i got a feeling that is the antvr of it, if i want a motion capture device i want the one that works best. so i guess time will tell what is the best, in the mean time i can save money.

yeah super tempting but i agree, for something like this you definitely want the best solution if you are producing content...gonna wait it out and see what their dk2 looks like...LOL!

Wow that looks pretty cool. Lot's of potential for indie/small developers/film makers.

The pedigree of the team seems pretty legit as well.

was thinking the same thing. Indies could really get good use out of this...if it delivers...

OK, I backed it. This Oculus Rift is costing me a fortune in peripherals and games. Hopefully I don't regret backing this when the Oculus Grip comes out. But I figure this can still be used for leg tracking or tracking the other hand, or for the second player.

As a VR enthusiast more than a dev, this looks like it hits the mark as a great input solution for a reasonable price. Before I will consider backing it, though, I really need to see some testimonials. ControlVR was very good about letting people test it and I was seriously considering backing them as a result. The price was just a bit too much for me. Besides, it's looking more and more like we need to let the market shake itself out to find out which ones will still be around and selling to CV1 users.

Not to discourage anyone from backing this, but Oculus outright bought Carbon Design Group. That may or may not have any predictive capability for other projects Oculus might be working on in the VR peripheral world.

It is only my opinion but if Carbon was only designing a CV1 or even CV2 HMD, I don't know that a buyout would make sense.

But that is said not knowing anything about how much collaboration would be required on an HMD. If the optical design is getting complicated or whatever, maybe it does make sense. But also, it's not hard to imagine the work on head tracking getting extended to hands, arms, and even the rest of the body.
