What you're showing here is nothing. Totally disappointing.

I won't even comment and say where and why I disagree with 99,99% in that text.

Sad to see a man calling himself a tech-enthusiast, writing such garbage.
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

Yeah, what a Debbie Downer! I guess the author doesn't like TV or Movies either?

Those don't smell either, so he probably doesn't. 😉

Definitely one of the lazier fill pieces I've read. He could have at least mentioned the ironic (meta ironic?) way that virtual vacations are being advertised to tourists who are likely already on vacation.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

That lest like an article and more like an angry forum post... They just kind of ranted and trailed off at the end.

I don't understand the irrational fear that so many have about the advent of VR bringing about the decline of real life.

I think VR is great anf the future, but it's just another medium. People are already "getting fat" working on the computer all day or watching TV. Why do people think that people are going to be taking away time from real life to use VR anymore than with anything else?

My time spent using the rift has been instead of playing games, watching TV or surfing the web on a 2d screen, not instead of going places.

And this fear that people won't travel to exotic places anymore because they can just do it in VR, is not only misplaced, but pretty freaking out of touch with the reality of people's finances. Not everybody can drop $30,000 to take their family to the Galapagos. Or get a few weeks off to travel Europe. But f them for wanting to see it, right?

I'm sorry to say I don't agree at all OP with your point of view. This is well written (note : English is not my native language but it was clear and understandable).

The only thing he said is: nothing can beat real life for now.

In VR device currently you know you are wearing some goggle due to black border all around, low resolution, you can't feel the sun of Mexico on your skin, can't smell the perfume of an exotic flower on Tahiti Island, can't touch the sand of the African desert and make it slowly go through your fingers, etc. Nothing beat a real trip for now, nothing.

Currently real picture or video in DK2 are low resolution, often just in 2D. Devices are not ready with copying real life. If somebody say, Hey I give you a ticket to go visit Japan, or if you don't like plane, I can make you visit it through VR ! What do you think I'll choose today (Sept 11, 2015)? Give me that ticket man, I grab my luggage right now! 😉

As he say to devs: stick to created words, imagination, wonderful place created from scratch, and don't try for now to compete with real life. I totally agree. I give up trying all video and demos trying to transport me in real place. This is so ugly ! I only kept demo and games showing created universes, or space, etc. Even racing a car ! I accept to play Project Car or Asseto Corsa in VR because I never tried such real cars and will never be able to do it. But how you compare be in the real car during a race and be in VR? You do VR because you don't have any other choice in that case IMO.

Now, in a near future, all that will be possible due to new technologies, added all senses to the VR device, and at that time, if somebody write the same article, I'll agree with you OP.

For now, even if I'm a real VR fan and believe it will be the VR revolution soon, for now, today, I'm agree with him : doing tourism in VR have nothing to do with real holiday, nothing.

Sorry for my bad english 😉

All things teem a good side and a bad side. The problem exists only when we refuse to accept this! Virtual reality on the one hand can be something wonderful, but if used the wrong way, it can also destroy mankind. For some people the vr is like a last chance to have a life. And that's a little scary!

"The HTC Vive is the most compelling device in consumer virtual reality, at the moment. Whether it’s feasible? Whether it gains developer support? All those other questions at the top of the article? Those are all realities of the business, and may ensure the Vive never takes off. The space demands are preposterous, the cost most likely outrageous, the adoption base potentially too niche for developers to take seriously. It’s a pipe dream inside a pipe dream—I’m not even sure virtual reality will survive the next few years, let alone its more-expensive variant."
