Took a large battery down by 1/3rd in a little over an hour. Seems to draw about 25W if the battery specs can be believed, but this battery could be old and way out of spec. Are the actual power requirements published anywhere?
EDIT: Looking at the product pages, it doesn't look like it can draw more than 18W. I wonder if it can tap 9V while charging and 5V while playing? The elite strap battery is just under 18Wh and it says it can extend play time by 2 hours ... so playing only takes 9W ?

The headset also gets really hot. Not sure Zuck thought this one through.

My battery was warmer than I've ever had it get, and the USB-C connector at the headset was warm as well. I wouldn't call them really hot because I consider really hot as the plastic may melt, but they were warmer than I ever experienced with quest 2.
My fear is that maybe we shouldn't be using batteries that can put out 9V as the quest 3 will use it when it sees it, but if the battery only puts out 5V, it will run on that. To test this, I guess I can try to play with the headset connected to the quest 2 wall wart, which just puts out 5V.

I noticed about a quarter of a 10k battery bank over an hour doing quest link, no significant heating on mine. I was playing Boneworks. If you assume 85% efficiency, 2500mah x.85 is about 2125 mah at 3.4 ish volts, so, 7 watts or so? Elite strap is 2300-ish mah capacity, so 2 hours-ish would say 5 watts about? I unno can't hook my kill-a-watt meter to the quest itself.

I think it's impossible to charge the battery when quest 3 uses passthrough. Even with a 22.5W battery when i watch a movie with passthrough that is not enough to charge Quest 3 (battery was slowly draining).
No problem if I don't use passthrough. I wonder who thought that was ok to have a product you can't charge quick enough to be able to use it at the same time...I hope they can fix that with the passthrough with an update.
I suppose it's useless to order a 30W battery and a 30W usb c cable ?

Passthrough does seem to eat the battery, hope that gets fixed in a future update

When the colour cameras are on and the extra compute used during mixed reality play, I don't think there's any avoiding heavy battery use, VR shouldn't be too outrageous though compared to Quest 2. I'll see if I can to some proper tests with a meter to get the figures. I need to spend some time having a play first.

It is interesting that you noticed it still draining. I'm not sure when it gives the warning, but I was at 17% after playing for an hour on the battery, so I think it may have charged some. I was playing eternal dungeon though and not doing passthrough. The battery is spec'd to do 5V, 9V, or 12V output. I still need to do the experiment to see if the quest 3 can power itself off a the 5V only quest 2 wall wart. If it can, then I would think that a 5V only battery may be a better choice. Of course as you mentioned, it would then be impossible to switch batteries without the headset turning off as the internal battery would continue to drain.

Not only is it tearing through battery, but the elite strap with battery is no longer being recognized by my quest 3. And I am not the only one with this issue. Found a reddit thread with multiple people having the same issues. Sounds like a firmware update is in order.

I had a similar experience tonight. Put the battery on when quest 3 was at 11%. Played for another hour. My brick battery went down to about 67% and the quest 3 went up to 17%. So some of the power went to power the headset and some went to charge the headset battery.
It didn't seem to be as hot, but I used a different cable (I used the charge cable from the quest 2 where last night I was using a cable that came with a 45W wall wart and was supposed to be high wattage).
Eventually I'll probably get the elite strap and battery, but if they are having issues, maybe its better to wait.
