Anyone having nausea in the new DevKit?

Fazz

I haven't seen anyone mention it which is a relief, but I just thought i'd ask if anyone is still suffering from nausea in DevKit 2?

How long did you last if you are still getting nauseas?

I should point out that I felt fine during these demos, it was only after I quit and decided to take a break that these "symptoms" appeared.

Probably eyestrain more than anything. One of the things about eyestrain is that it comes on gradually and you keep compensating for it, so you don't really notice it happening at the time. When you move away from the screen/HMD, you suddenly notice you have a headache. It's a good idea to take frequent breaks and go focus on thing that are different distances away from your eyes. This is especially important with HMDs where your eyes must relax and focus on infinity without converging. That's not normal and they get too used to it after a while. As has been mentioned before, this can mess with your accommodation reflex and make it hard to focus after you take off the HMD.

Try to avoid using it for more than about 15 minutes until you get used to these effects. You should also use the IPD calibration tool and try experimenting with the lenses and eye relief settings to make sure you aren't straining your eyes more than necessary.

I think that is pretty much what is happening to me since moving and turning in the demos doesn't bother me at all. Taking 20-30 minute breaks between demos seems to have positive effect and I no longer get headaches.

My eyes do hurt a little after coming out my 2nd demo session. Slightly felt disoriented as well.

So, I recieved my DK2 yesterday, had fun with it the whole day. Could do whatever I wanted in the Desk demo and the Tuscany demo from Oculus, in Alone at sea kon tiki, Couch Knights and in Elite: Dangerous. I did have a slight feeling of the sickness that got me with DK1, but it was only for a few moments. I could fly around and look around all that I wanted, it didn't give me any problems.

For your information: i was using the DK1 since September 2013 and at first I got sick incredibly fast. It was also the smell of the foam and all that really made me sick. It got better when I let some air to the DK1 so that the smell would go away and I had some fun time with TimeRifters. This was the first demo that really was no problem for me, no matter what kind of movement there was.

There were some people with me trying it yesterday and I would say: 5 out of 7 didn't have any problems. And I think, with some usage and practice, it will get better for the remaining two of them. 🙂

The positional tracking does a perfect job making it more comfortable. When I got out of camera range, it was noticable of course, but it didn't give me any kind of nausea.

Hello Everyone ,

i did try i out yesterday and even let my family in for a go...

I came to the conclusion that, when you configure it correctly ( IPD , your high etc ) it does help greatly. Be sure to not decrease your Eye Relief too much , as it may lead to getting "sick" .., find your best working setup and then you will be able to play for hours ...

Important to note:

When at first it seemed to work flawlessly ; it was not. It did have problems with Screen Tearing that was not as visible in the Desk-Demo , as it was in other Demos.... i got it working , when extending the desktop to the Rift, rotating its Picture and forcing V-Sync via Geforce Settings.... It then worked liked advetised : 75 Hz , 75 fps , 2 ms , and no ghosting at all ... wonderfully clean scenes

After that i could play Helix Rollercoaster and Cyberspace without getting sick, because the framerate was stable and i had no longer any screen tearing... , as soon as i had some stuttering i was instantly feeling nauseaous ... so be careful that you take your time configuring your hmd 😃

I also get kinda nauseous after playing Elite: Dangerous after a while. This is probably because the game play itself requires using roll/pitch to loop around and pursue the enemies.

But I figure I'd have gotten sick in a real flight too for any maneuver like that.

Ok.... DK2 is GREAT!!!!

On my DK1 i didnt get all that nausea BUT -> last time I've played QUAKE 2 VR with my friend and there was a deathmatch map with low gravity. As a result, my character was falling very slowly and It did bother my balance senses to the point i actually felt BAD...somewhat like nausea.... and then after putting my RIFt off I noticed that MY NECK TONSILS BECAME SWOLLEN !!! 😕 very weird feeling... never had that before on the DK1 😛

I guess I cannot do space low-gravity fighting 😛 Because DK2 makes it somewhat THAT ULTRA REAL !!! LOL

To all those experiencing nausea, has anyone tried over the counter travel sickness meds like Stugeron?

Can I advise that there is a danger to come to rely on meds to address sim-sickness. This is like a sticking plaster on a broken leg - you are covering up the situation rather than addressing the symptoms. This masking can prove counter-productive if not bringing its own risks.

Thanks for the reply!

I am not so sure that using these meds is as dangerous as you illustrate however. I do not think they are a sticking plaster so much as they are like stabilisers for bike-riding or "water wings" for swimming. If we know that people need to get their "VR legs", and that this is an adaptation of the brain, why should the adaptation not occur in the absence of nausea? If I am taking stugeron to mask the nausea, why should I not simultaneously be getting "VR legs"?

Otherwise you are suggesting this adaptation only occurs if you allow yourself to feel sick, and I have not seen evidence that is the case (of course am open to evidence to the contrary). Motion sickness meds should not be something you take on an ongoing basis, I agree on that. If I am still taking them after weeks of Rift use, this is not a desirable state of affairs.

The most desirable thing as you say is that we address the causes of nausea at their root. Thats for the CV1. Personally I just want to get the most out of my DK2 🙂

I'm getting nauseous and dizzy, but i'm certain that it's because of the screen tearing/judder i have. It's really bad and can't get rid of it. Have tried several things..

I'm experimenting with different options to reduce nausea which is caused by movement. Those of you who are fine when the player body is still and you only move your head but who get simulator sick when the body is moved or turned with mouse and keyboard, could you please try out the alternative movement options from http://tore-knabe.com/virtual-reality#MovementExperiments and tell me whether you notice any improvement?

In DK2 I'm totally fine when sitting but any sort of movement or turning with gamepad or mouse/keyboard just feels wrong and floaty. And cyberspace just makes me go GOD NO!! And that foam smell is starting to get to me too...

And I just tried the movement experiments and canvas mode helps a bit. Third person mode felt perfect. Strobe mode helped a bit but it looked bad instead. I know from other demos that vr comfort mode doesn't feel bad at all for me when turning. But any backward/forward or strafing will get to me within minutes and it just feels wrong as soon as I touch the stick. Even slow walking speed feels bad but atleast then I can manage a bit longer than fast movment. I wonder if headbobbing would help when moving? Atleast then I could headbob in rhythm to the bob and see if that helps since leaning in UE4 rollercoaster helped a bit.

Even the turning/moving in titans of space did feel floaty but that I could handle that just fine for some reason and in polyrider I only felt a small amount of discomfort.

Only perfect demos for me so far has been the oculus desk and sightline the chair, though the end scene of sightline made me feel more or less exactly like I was falling and tumbling around so that was pretty cool  Hopefully my VR adventuring won't have me be stuck to a chair professor xavier style... 😞
