Are my specs good enough for VR content to appear lifelike?

I just purchased an Alienware laptop, and I'm not sure whether I set something up incorrectly or if my specs just aren't good enough to get what I want. Video appears pixelated and is just not lifelike at all. It's difficult to even make out a person's face in a video if they're not close to me. Lens spacing appears to be set up correctly.

Better specs will provide better performance, but the graphics are still mostly the same as the developers created. Some people will use super sampling to get a higher resolution looking image, but it can only help so much (and with a 1060 laptop, you probably won't have the headroom). It's also limited by the resolution of the screen, and the effect of the lenses, so the image won't be the quality of a monitor in any case.

Gotcha. I guess I'm just confused because of people who have raved about how lifelike their VR experiences were. I was expecting it to be as if I was standing in the same room as the people in the video, or at least close to it. But if it's not possible, it's not possible, for now.

Generally Unreal and CryEngine driven games look quite realistic but a great deal of games that are out are using Unity so are 'stylised'. Some Unity driven games are using the same sort of textures that the Unreal Engine and the CryEngine are using (PBR (Physically Based Rendering) textures) such as Technolust but having textures that react realistically to lighting and reflections takes more GPU power to drive 2 x screens at 90fps.

Video image quality for 360 videos is ALWAYS pretty poor because to produce high quality video you need to spend a SHITLOAD of time and money. 180 degree VR videos are MUCH cheaper to produce at a decent resolution, which is why 180 degree videos are so popular in the VR Porn industry. Erm. Apparently. So I've heard. 😛 😄

SWIM said that they were trying to watch said 180 degree videos, videos that were supposedly produced at the highest quality, but that those same videos had turned out to have poor image quality, at least in his experience. He was sorely disappointed and went to the Oculus forums to seek a solution. What have you..heard..in regard to others' experiences with this?

Like with anything it all comes down to have much the producers of these 180 degree videos spend creating it. These days the best quality VR Porn videos are in 180 degres and are at 4K resolution (apparently). The difference between the quality of the average 180 degree video and even a high quality 360 video is pretty much night and day these days.

Faces in 180 degree videos only look good close up. This is due to poor resolution of both the Oculus screens, and the video camera itself.  Great VR video is not here yet.  Nothing is wrong with your setup, your just 5 or more years too soon.....

When people talk about good VR realism, they are not talking about recorded video, but about feeling "presence" in CGI type scenes.

The highest quality 180 degree 3D videos I have heard of have a resolution of 5400x2700. They are produced by a Czech VR porn studio, they only recently started filming at this quality. When the actress had her face close to the camera I heard that other people who watched it found it startlingly lifelike. You can watch the trailer at their website. Or so I have heard.

The Rift itself will display very sharp images, even with a floating screen like what you get with Virtual Desktop and utilizing only part of the available real estate. The screen-door effect doesn't bother me.
This documentary video looks pretty good to me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCZXMz0zmkI
This quality in 180° would be interesting to see.
You might compare it to your other videos, to see whether it's the media or the hardware.

Yup, the quality of the CzechVR videos are the best in the business and have been right from the start. So a friend has told me.
