I am planning to buy the Oculus rift CV1 next month, and I also had DK1. back at DK1, there was a program called VR Cinema. It provided some great immersive feeling for a very large movie theatre.
Now I saw a lot of alternatives to watch movies in VR surroundings, but is there something better then VR cinema to get such a feeling of a big movie theatre like VR cinema? For my gear VR I sometimes used Oculus movie which provided also a cinema, but I liked the fact that it was possible to walk around in VR cinema 🙂
I believe there's a theater in Virtual Desktop but you can't walk around. Big Screen allows you to move around but only by highlighting a pre-set position and moving to it. It has a nice penthouse that can have up to 4 people, each with screens. Both apps along with Envelop allow you to resize the screen, curve it, and change the distance.
Cinavo, the Drive in theater works best for the Rift as the ambient light around the screen helps to counter and lens rays and the quality looks and feels right for a drive in screen.
The "Bigscreen" app which is free on the oculus store is pretty good. Haven't done extensive testing but it seems to remove the need for virtual desktop.
Honestly, the free Oculus Video app is the best one I've used so far. I don't know about walking around, and you can only use it for video files you actually have on your computer (or watch the stuff offered natively in the app) but the theater environments look great, especially when the content on the screen "casts light" onto those environments.
It's hard being the voice of reason when you're surrounded by unreasonable people.
I wish they would combine vTime and a theatre. The ability to watch movies with friends would be tremendous. Better than real life, in fact, since you can mute them if they chat too much! 🙂
