Best software to rip 3D movies for the Rift?

Hey all -

In prep for the arrival of my Rift I upgraded my 5" drive to a Blu-Ray drive. Now I am wondering how to best (and cheapest) rip 3D movies for playback in the rift.

Currently I use Handbrake and DVDFab Passkey Lite (read: Free) to rip DVDs and Blu-Rays. Any thoughts on how to rip 3D movies?

I am not overly technical when it comes to video. I currently just rip as Mp4 for playback on my computer and other devices through PLEX, and that works great for me. I don't capture the loss-less audio or anything like that.

Suggestions?

PS - If you are currently using the software you recommend, any suggested setting would be helpful too 🙂

SBS is the most common format at this point as far as I've seen. I don't see anything using anaglyph anymore if that's what you mean by usual 3D.

I have a bunch of 3D bluray SBS videos I'm looking to eventually format for the Rift, as well as a bunch of clips I took with the 3D camera on my phone (although there I do worry about the possible nausea from the constant camera shake).

Normally bluray itself is frame packed 3d. Side by side is generated by the player when needed (frame packed is higher quality, side by side is lower resolution).
But some blurays (cheap shows, porn or pirated) use hard coded side by side (it's cheaper or easier to produce or something).
At least this is what I've read on the net, I've got a 3d tv but never tried a 3d movie on it (my bluray player is only 2d).

Apparently Stereo Movie Maker can convert between different stereo formats.

Interesting... I guess it doesn't matter for the immediate future given the resolution of the Rift, but that's good news that I've got 2x the resolution I thought I did, since resolution for really high fov is so demanding.

You can use "DVDFab Blu-ray 3D Ripper" to make a SBS rip and then play on the Rift with the "Stereoscopic Player".

Thanks! That was nice and easy.

P.S. You do realize this is not making it any easier to wait for my kit to arrive, right?! 😉

P.P.S. I also blame you for the straw that broke the camel's back with regards to the silly amount I just spent on a bank of subwoofers to put together the ultimate concert video replay setup I've been thinking about... 😉

Does anyone with their kit have any experience with what happens when you take a 3D video meant for a traditional display and make it wide-fov like this? I imagine only the center of the frame is comfortably viewable?

Having had a chance to try this out on the Rift I have to say the results are better than I thought. I think today's HD media is high enough resolution to survive the high fov transition and still be enjoyable. I was afraid current media would just not even come close and would be outdated in a way that no amount of hardware improvements (except time travel I guess) would be able to fix.
