I just received an email from Meta saying that at 11:59pm on March 15 both the Quest only virtual pet game Bogo and the Rift/Link only single/multiplayer shooter Dead and Buried will stop running.
There may be more, these are just the ones I own.
One of the former Meta developers who worked on Bogo made a statement on reddit:
"My team built this. Two things:
1/ its Unreal, they dont have a team to support this (everyone on that team aside from 3d art and anim have left - tho one engineer came back and is on Avatars)
2/ the OS isnt as backwards compatible as it should be
3/ BONUS thing: I wish they preserved their/our history, from Dreamdeck to Farlands to Toybox. I dont think its a priority there bc all the old leaders are long gone and there are ppl there running orgs that probably have never even been in this experience.
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot! Ok, a bit of an exaggeration.
A few of us are making a virtual creature game, though. www.windupminds.com because we want to follow through on all the product implications that Bogo showed us!"
Bogo was a free single player experience that came with the Quest 1. It was a great intro to VR, we need more Bogo, not kill it off entirely!
If Meta can't update its own small in-house app to be compatible with the latest Quest OS, how many other games will break? It sounds like a big change is coming.

Oh man! I loved Dead & Buried. So many good memories of playing through all the campaigns with various members of this community. Not to mention our own community Tournaments!
Sad to see it go. I sure hope many VR enthusiasts were able to enjoy it. It would be great to see Meta double-down on supporting these legendary experiences.

It would be nice if they said what the breaking changes are.
Years ago the Rift SDK had a major change, they modified how eyes were reported, which would allow canted screens or eye tracking (previously you had a headset pose and IPD distance, after they had full pose for each eye). But the runtime supported both, so old games ran fine.

Great memories. It's the kind of game they should have pre-installed on the Quest 3.
They want us to be getting together online - something that's already created surely wouldn't take that much effort/cost to get working and given away (so says me, who isn't a game developer or businessman 😁 )

Yep! I've always loved that idea. Even to this day, I feel that there is high value in having each new Quest unit come pre-installed with:
I get that these are old, but they are still amazing VR experiences, especially for newcomers. Those are the types of VR titles that keep the consumer fiending for more! 😁
