Build spec and graphics card choice

nonyo
Honored Guest
I have an sdk2 and 3 computers that it will not work with.

I'm building a new desktop and wish to check the build spec and, in particular, the graphics card choice before pulling the trigger on a purchase.

Following is the spec I plan to purchase. Could someone please recommend one, or more, of the graphic card options that will work with the sdk2?

OS
ubuntu 14.10 (64-bit)
Processor
3.6GHz i7-4790 (8MB Cache, 4 cores, 8 threads)
Memory
32GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4x8GB)
Graphics:
Intel HD 4600 Graphics
1 GB GT 730 with 384 CUDA Cores
1 GB GTX 750 with 512 CUDA Cores
2 GB GTX 750 Ti with 640 CUDA Cores
2 GB GTX 960 Superclocked with 1024 CUDA Cores
4 GB GTX 980 with 2048 CUDA Cores
Storage
250GB M.2 SSD
2TB 3.5" 7200 RPM
Media
Dual Layer CD-RW/DVD-RW
SD, Memory Stick, Compact Flash Reader
Networking
WiFi up to 867 Mbps + bluetooth

Thanks!
Dave

Well Intel GPUs won't work well, so you can forget about that. For GPU I'd get at least the 960. VR games are intensive and those cheaper cards probably won't handle the heat. Also, while Linux is technically supported with the SDK, the vast majority of the content available is on PC (or Mac). Rest of the specs look OK.

You should aim to buy a Gerforce 780ti or better

Can you buy a Titan X and let us all know how good it is? 😛

If not, Cyber's the man to listen to

You forgot the GTX 970 which fit right between the 960 and the 980 (obvious heh)

And I would install Windows not Ubuntu

I'd go with one GTX 980 now and then later in the year or early 2016 get another one to run in sli....

bah... 970 in sli should be future proof... I dont see why you would need to pay the extra for two 980. Unless you are rich enough of course

A 980 is better than 970 SLI in terms of VR. SLI adds latency and compatibility issues and is not recommended.

Maybe that will change in the future, but that is the situation now.

I know that... just like a Titan X is better than 2 980 in SLI for VR

But if my goal was to SLI for VR or whatever reason, I would go for 2 970 over 2 980 for the price... Still, I really dont like SLI and I don't think I will go down that path ever again. So many bugs, issues and incompatibility and not only with VR

I understand that a great deal of work is being done right now on the drivers for SLI and Crossfire to eliminate that latency from VR. The plan is to dedicate one card to each eye. I believe any added latency from using SLI and Crossfire is a short term problem only.
