With the REQUIREMENT of eventual Facebook account needed to use my hardware I've decided to put that dog out of its misery. I know that I still have time, and plenty of it, before I can't use my oculus and I'm aware that the force is strictly because of my refusal to use Facebook. I have my reasons why I won't use FB and I am firm on my choices. What I haven't done yet is decide what VR platform will be my next choice. If anyone has some thoughts of what platform would a good choice I'm open to suggestions. I've really enjoyed my experience with oculus and disheartened that it is ending.

Nah, that is more along the lines of pure speculation, not factual observation and analysis. For example, what about those using Re-Vive to purchase new Oculus titles? Since the titles are "new" purchases made intentionally with the aid of re-vive, those are not situations about "losing an investment." After all, you can't lose something you never had to begin with.

 

The fact is, people use Re-Vive to proactively purchase newly released Oculus titles. We've seen plenty of that type of commentary on this forum for years.


SteamVR is notorious for having low quality (but large quantity) VR titles. The AAA selection differences between OculusVR and SteamVR is measurably and observably true. Sure someone can choose to reject that based on speculation. But the evidence speaks for itself regardless.

Fair enough, I will say in my case, I'm glad the option is there because I invested a good amount of money in games I purchased in the Oculus store.  Perhaps there may be a few others that would feel the same.

 

I get it, we understand, you hate steam. Sure steam has a bunch of trash, but it has a lot of good stuff too.  I'm a picky gamer, that's why I prefer two specific games.  I read reviews and they help me make informed decisions and if the game is really bad, I'll just return it.  I personally think Oculus has a lot of trash as well.  I think Content is the problem right now, there's not enough of it that is good enough to hold my interest personally, I don't know how others in here feel, but that's how I feel with most of the games.  That Horror game that Rune posted looks creepy as hell though, I'm going to read the reviews and probably pick it up.

Not even remotely true. That's just more inaccurate speculation. Last year I purchased over $100 of Steam titles and an Alienware laptop to enjoy them all. Steam is great for vanilla/pancake gaming. But its VR selections are certainly more "quantity over quality."

Well yeah, most of the non-Oculus users seem to enjoy making that statement on the Oculus forum. That's a fairly predictable response tbh. Comparatively, OculusVR is the Holy Grail of AAA VR selections compared to Steam; but the allure of pretending otherwise while on the Oculus forum is quite tempting apparently.

 

As for the horror title, Hinge... it looks cute n' all. I've seen the playthrough videos. However, it also looks like something I've played through in VR so many times before over recent years. I mean honestly, Hinge has the same creepy mechanical monkey banging symbols that we find in Dead Secret back in 2016.

 

Not to mention that objective reviews of Hinge discuss its lack of realism and buggy controls. 

 

I'm more interested in real breakthrough compelling experiences. Not regurgitation and nonstop mimicry.

 

 

If it's Hinge, then you shouldn't bother - it's really bad. Some Russian devs trying to make easy money and finding out you can't make an awesome high-end PCVR game in 6 months, lol. 

You could try Cosmodread, it's a Quest port, so no polys and many ugly low-res textures, but lights and shadows are fine - I ended up refunding it though. 

Maskmaker is better - but it's not horror. 

 

The best horror you can get right now is probably A Wake Inn - it's real PCVR, great lighting and dynamic shadows, great textures - even using lcd, blacks are great.

There we go again... believing that a game is great simply because it has nice graphics.

 

A Wake Inn, beyond the graphics, isn't much of a game worth recommending at all. There's so many better horror experiences in the VR Space, like RE7 for PS4 and Red Matter for PCVR.

 

Hell, Dread Halls is better than Wake Inn lol

Well Steam has the best made for VR game to date with Half Life Alyx. Just mho of course.

I did not really get that much off the Oculus store - a few titles that never really did much to really grab me. Asgard's Wrath would be an exception to that of course, very good game. I also enjoyed the short Vader Immortal experiences, for the price they were pretty good. Oh and Robo Recall, had many hours of great fun with that one.

Whilst I did not get it through Oculus but through Steam, Medal of Honor Above and Beyond was great.  And obviously Oculus had their hand in it.

 

But I am mainly a simmer so the bulk of my VR playtime are with those.

Possibly, but that's just another video game. VR is not just for games, much like computers are not just for games.

 

Steam is a gaming platform for gaming software and gaming hardware. The Oculus software ecosystem caters to VR as a whole, including education, business, and social. Steam just makes gaming stuff for gamers.

 

So while we can agree that Steam has "a great video game for VR," Oculus maintains the best and largest "made for VR experiences" across the full spectrum of Virtual Reality itself.

im on board with the not liking that im forced to make a Facebook account part if I want to keep my games and use my purchased hardware..

I dont really use social media, and I dont see that changing either.

To those who say they wouldnt have an account  encase someone at work gets them fired as they saw you posted something on there... Id say if you cant be careful on what you post.... then simply never post anything.

 

My initial experience of even trying to setup a working Facebook account is not a good one, and this worries me.  Although I accept Facebook didnt cause my issue... the time its taking to resolve it continues to be a problem.


I loved my CV1, and have taken the plunge and the Quest 2 has just been ordered, just in time for Zenbane to mention a Quest pro 😕

I will have a forced Facebook account (if they ever fix the locked status), doesnt mean I must use it and tell the world what I just ate for dinner.

That's another advantage with the CV1 - for hmds already registered to your account, you can use them at least until Jan 1 2023 with no need for a Facebook account. But any new Oculus hmd bought after the Quest 2 launch requires a Facebook account. 

 

Many users have been auto-banned trying to merge their Oculus and Facebook accounts. I've bought games and apps for more the $2000 in the Oculus Store - I'll keep using only my Oculus account for as long as possible. Hopefully Facebook/Oculus will have fixed this before the end of next year. I have a Facebook account, but never use it - nor do I intend ever to use it. 2c.
