CPU bottlenecking

Hi there -

I'm an indie developer new to game design (film background) and new to VR. I've unboxed my DK2 and really enjoying exploring the demos and beginning my work with UE4. I was wondering if someone could help me out with an upgrade choice.

I just got a gtx 970. I suspect that I'm not getting the performance one would expect from the card and my CPU is bottlenecking it.

Would i need a better CPU to get the most out of my DK2 and GPU?

My current CPU is a i7 920 2.67ghz.

I'm working of a p6t deluxe v2 motherboard, the list of supported CPUs are:

Core i7 920(2.66G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.C0,130W)
Core i7 920(2.66G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.D0,130W)
Core i7 930(2.8G,L2:8M, rev.D0,130W)
Core i7 940(2.93G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.C0,130W)
Core i7 950(3.06G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.D0,130W)
Core i7 960(3.2G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.D0,130W)
Core i7 970(3.2G,Smart Cache:12M, rev.B1,130W)
Core i7 980(3.33G,Smart Cache:12M, rev.B1,130W)
Core i7 Extreme Edition 965(3.20G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.C0,130W)
Core i7 Extreme Edition 975(3.33G,L2:4x256KB,L3:8M, rev.D0,130W)
Core i7 Extreme Edition 980X (3.33G,shared cache:12M, rev.B1,130W)
Core i7 Extreme Edition 990X(3.46G,L2:6x256KB,L3:12M,rev.B1,130W)

Any suggestions about which would be best?

Thanks!

Do you know the CPU is the bottleneck?

With the Oculus SDK there are busy waits for syncing with the GPU that may look like it's using all of your CPU when it's really not that intensive. Maybe that is what you are seeing.

No don't know if that's the problem for sure, is there a way I can find out?

Will o/c tonight and see what I can get out of it 🙂

I recently upgraded from an i7 920 to an i5 4590 and I didn't notice a difference to be honest.

Also had the i7 OC @ 3.8 and it didn't have much impact.

What did have an impact was upgrading from an HD7950 to a GTX970 which I did before upgrading the CPU.

Benchmarks show a decent increase in performance for the new CPU but in reality it was running fine before with the i7 920 + gtx970.
