I've only had the CV1 for 8 weeks. It's my first headset and I have 3 sensors. Half Life :Alyx is just amazing.
I ordered a Rift S on overclockers.uk and it went through. I didn't get a tracking number for 3 days, so asked on their forum and was told my purchase was cancelled as they over sold. Apparently, I was supposed to get an email stating that, but I didn't. I'm glad about that, as I've changed my mind.
Thing is..I saw that the Oculus site had the Rift S available today, but I didn't go ahead with the purchase.
I figured it would be best to wait for the Reverb G2. 4K per eye with Valve influencing the final product? Do you hear boss music?
Seems like a win to me.
I think I'll upgrade my graphics card with the £400 I was going to drop on the RIft S to make way for this G2.
I personally still love my CV1's. The S is a decent upgrade but the things i love about cv1 that dont carry over for me: -Perfect tracking (though the s has gotten way better over time, i still prefer the reliability of outside in) -Great onboard audio output -Original touch controller weight and layout -Higher refresh rate (most wont notice, but for me the S felt just a little less smooth because of this) -Super comfortable and i can just slip it on/off, no messing with the back knob on the S
The S was def. a stopgap in my opinion so if you're ok with the cv1 and dont mind waiting another year or so for the first of gen 2 then i'd just stick with it.
CV1 has been my daily workhorse for development going on almost 5 years and it'l be a sad day when i retire it :'(
Ya, long live the Rift cv1. King of all Oculus headset imho. I also hope mine lasts a long time. I noticed a bit of cv1 cable related problems yesterday. Fortunately I have a nice new spare cv1 cable that I bought ~1.5 years ago, lol! If the headset itself dies I'll probably just replace it with my Quest w/official link cable. Once you go oled, it's hard to stomach lcd headsets imho.
i9 13900K water cooled, RTX4090, Z790 MB w/wifi6e, 32Gb 6400 ram, 2x2TB SSD, 1000W PSU, Win 11, QPro, Q3, w/Link and Air Link, Vive Pro1 with Etsy lens mod and Index Controllers
Yeah my CV1 has been knocking it out the park of late due to the crisis, and playing HL:A with it was a utter joy, and it will be 3 years old next month so i hope it will last until the next gen of VR hardware appears because as point out by Tom above, once you go OLED it is hard to go back, i have 3 OLED HMDS at the moment, CV1, Vive and the PSVR, and one LCD based VR WMR headset, and it is quite litrally night and day between them, and i don't think that OLED genie can be put back in the bottle at this point, so i am dreading the day i have no option but to go LCD if the industry decided that is the way to go.
I'm boxing my CV1 and 3 sensors and sending them to my son who is in college in AZ. He just got my fathers hand-me-down computer (things a gaming beast) and fully capable of handling PCVR. I find my Quest on VD and more particularly on a Link cable (official Link, aftermarket sucked balls) to be more than adequate. I have a second Quest on order at the moment for my wife. My father ordered a Quest on Tuesday for my mother too - even though he has a Vive pro.
Yep, plenty of CV1 owners have moved over to Rift-S happily. Although it does seem like as an overall product, Rift-S has more configuration issues than the now stable CV1. Granted, CV1 was unstable as hell during the first few months back in 2016.
Personally, I see no point in upgrading from my CV1 until there is a true "2nd Generation" VR HMD. As of yet, we simply do not have that. We have plenty of nominal upgrades:
The HP Reverb improved the visual Quality
Index added finger tracking
Rift-S gives us inside-out tracking.
But these are all 1.x.y upgrades, not 2.0 upgrades. Granted, some people may consider these "next gen," but if we really take this to paper to compare first gen and the latest headsets, they do not take 100% of the current state and improve upon it at all. Instead, a sacrifice is made in one direction in order to create an upgrade in another direction. That's not next gen.
The closest I've seen to a true "2nd Gen" upgrade is the controller-less hand-tracking that Quest offers. But it is more of a "teaser" at what the future entails for next gen, since overall Quest is still a first gen stand-alone headset.
