What do you think the odds are CV2 ships with a 4K screen, eye tracking and foveated rendering by SMI? SMI is apparently trying to push its solution with major VR manufacturers which I assume includes Oculus. The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to wait for CV2 and use Gear VR with my upcoming S7 for temporary VR fix until CV2 arrives....

About half year ago I asked for a price on upgrading my dk2 with eye tracking and got a £12k offer (assuming I provide the HMD and they just upgrade it), so I'm kinda curious where t's hw got that info from.

I don't normally doubt info on tom`s hardware but the mail from SMI is still in my inbox.

No it doesn't. Games in the Oculus store must perform well on the required hardware to be approved. Everything in the Oculus store meets the spec by definition.

If you leave the walled garden and download games from the internet wilderness then the performance requirements do not apply.
Here's the thing... I couldn't possibly assume that the Oculus Store was a requirement. After all, the other person only said games (could just be me, "for CV1" doesn't imply O-store to me).

I very specifically said that Palmer Luckey said the Rift minimum system wouldn't change, and thus even a game released in two years for CV1 will still run at a solid 90fps on those specs. Dunno why you would just totally ignore the first part.

CV1 market will need to prove itself successful before CV2 financial commitment is made...

Zero chance of 4k screens, P.C.s are going to struggle to push the CV1's specs never mind duel 4k screens.


Your going to be waiting forever because there is always going to be something better in 12 months. That's cutting edge tech for you.

You cant say that...

First it wouldnt be dual 4K it would be dual half 4k
And second thing... With eye tracking and low lod (level of detail) for everything surrounding what you are looking at (making only what you are looking at full resolution) 4K devices would be possible (it is mostly where all of this is going to in a couple of years)

Pascal chips are coming out this year which purportedly double current performance.

And CV1 demonstrates Oculus has no issues with requiring the latest generation of hardware.

The DK platforms have elements that will be used in the consumer release, but are very far from the final requirements for the consumer application - and are not good examples to hold up for comparison (a electronics manufacturer judged on the production units not the DK's!)

Well, @tranceology3 - if I was rating that post like a maths paper, that was a clear E-, best go back and do some more homework, and avoid depending on assumption and anticipation!

I think a lot of people do not realize what eye tracking and foveated rendering can do for performance at 4K. Only an area at which you are directly looking at would be rendered in 4K with resulting speed up between 200% to 700% (400% is the figure I saw the most). In addition, as edmg has pointed out, the cost of this new tech can be less than then $10 if manufactured in large quantities (and they were just able to figure how to track eyes at 250hz which can track even involuntary eye movement).

As to whether we will have to wait 2 to 3 years to see new version of Oculus, well market gets to decide that not Oculus. As new tech starts rolling in, a lot of competitors will be trying to outdo Oculus with better units and newer tech. Sure Oculus can decide to sit and wait with an antiquated platform for 2 to 3 years and lose all the potential market share or they will move with the technology. VR today is like personal computing was in the early days when the new system you bought was outdated in few months.

For me 4K, eye tracking and foveated rendering is a minimum entry point and I do not think I will have to wait too long get it especially with the speed that the VR tech is moving and all the billions getting invested in this space.

You should save your money until CV3 comes out. It will be even better....
