Can someone from Oculus explain a detail from the EULA?

You may use the headset to develop commercial software intended solely for use with the headset, provided that you may only distribute such software via distribution channels that have been approved by Oculus in writing.

What does that mean exactly?

If you release software that is specially made only for the rift you have to use the Oculus Rift store?

Also what about adult software titles? Is it possible to make software that's content won't be approved by the official store and sell it on your own website?

Hmm, this is the sort of thing that I was worried about when the FB deal was announced. I decided not to cancel my DK2 order because it's still the best hardware to develop on for now. But if there's going to be some kind of walled garden, I won't be releasing anything for that. I'm broadly on the same side of the fence as Notch regarding Facebook and don't want to support that business in any way if I can help it. I'm also slightly concerned about the addition of a runtime to the SDK, which could be used, along with licence agreements, to move to goalposts in the future.

Hopefully the clarification we'll get is that some over-zealous idiot added this clause without approval and it's going to be taken out. I doubt it was written by a lawyer as it's ambiguous enough that I doubt it would hold up to a court challenge, but I wouldn't like to have to pay for that. If the "clarification" is anything else then I'll remain highly skeptical, because such statements are not legally binding.

I'm also far less concerned with what Oculus says and does now and more concerned with what Facebook might do in 2-5 years time after any initial competition has been killed off (if we, the community, allows that to happen).

Hmmmm... if they are trying to tell us that if I make any commercial software that wants to support the Rift, that I can only support the Rift and not other VR headsets, then I'm going to be pissed with Oculus and will be looking forward even more to my meeting in a couple months with Sony 😄

Keyword: solely

I take it to mean if you intend to produce an oculus exclusive title, they want a say in where it gets sold.

That's what I'm taking from the whole thing. I think there is more than meets the eye no pun intended going on here then they are revealing. I've been watching the forums for the past couple of weeks and have noticed a thing or two.

First, there was some guy a couple weeks back who created a thread stating he was trolling and received a shipping notice. People who knew this guy as someone who constantly trolls the community, Cyberreality warned him for "trolling", said it wasn't true and stated he'd keep an eye on him.

A guy whos first post a week or two ago said he got his DK2 and had a big NDA sheet inside the shipment and came on to talk about it, no where near trying to troll people like the other guy and Cyber flat out banned him outright and said he couldn't confirm or deny if that was true and to move on and locked the thread. That doesn't make sense why he'd warn the guy who was clearly a troll in more than one case and someone who was trying to talk about his DK2 apparently in his hands and had 1 post. He should've been warned and Cyber was able to say about the troll that he was wrong but couldn't confirm or deny the guy he just shut out. Doesn't make sense.

The whole SDK delaying the release of more DK2s to me as a dev never made sense. Also, I am an UE4 dev and they released 4.3 the same day OVR announced a delay due to the SDK. Epic said clearly that DK2 is supported out of the box and OVR claimed the issue in the SDK was so incredibly bad that they claimed it wouldn't even work well if at all. But someone asked about 4.3 and Cyber said it would work fine. A serious SDK bug that was described the way it was would mean Epic would've notified their devs about it and immediately posted a hotfix. Now, its speculation and its definitely possible the SDK had issues, I'm not going to assume I know. But if DK2 works with 4.3 that was released the day of this announcement of the delay, I find it very hard to believe it was so bad that they had to delay shipment. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Also, the final thing which I saw nobody mention, the FB/Oculus acquisition closed 2 days ago and they started notifying people 1 day after, coincidence?

It seems fairly standard a rule, if you dev a commercial title that advertises the rift, it needs to only be sold somewhere approved by oculus. Most likely you'll be selling on steam, so they'll just say sure. But if you make a game that's going to sour the name of the rift and try profiting on it by selling it on some darknet site, they want a clause to stop you. It's the same if you're making a hentai thing for the wii-u, or something else that may conflict with the moral values the company needs to display.

That sounds a bit more authoritarian than I meant but it's really nothing absurd. As for the conspiracies, why has no one come out with a sony paid forum user spreading discontent in a bid for corporate espionage? 😛

Just make it also work with a mouse 😉

It won't be as good, but it's technically not Rift exclusive.
