Cant seem to switch off ASW!

Apologies if this has been answered before but I cant seem to switch off Asynchronous Space Warp! Every time I disable it in the debug tool I find that after using the Rift it is automatically back at 'auto'! I cant see a save settings button either. Is this a bug or are Oculus refusing to allow you to disable it!

ASW has turned Oculus Home, which used to be as smooth as butter, into an infuriating 'twitch' fest!

Please don't answer with something like 'Why would you want to switch it off...' etc. I just want to know if its possible to get rid of ASW forever!

Thanks.

What are your PC specs? Could be forcing it back if they aren't above recommended?

Specs are definitely up to par. As I mentioned above, Oculus Home was beautifully smooth until ASW was launched. Ever since, its just been a twitch fest (happens whenever I move my head - I also sometimes get a double image) which I first assumed might be down to sensor issue's but now think is ASW related.

Since you've mentioned the debug tool, you can use the overlay. With that system you should have no problem whatsoever getting 90 fps in Home (or most games, for that matter) and ASW should not be an issue - the overlays can tell you what you are achieving. If you were able to turn off ASW permanently (not possible afaik, though maybe the tray tool can help) you'd be suffering 45 fps, which also is far from smooth.

If you can't get 90 fps with that system in home you have a problem with your system, not with ASW.

I don't think its a problem with my system. I get 19500 in Firestrike (1080p) and run The Witcher 3 at ultra settings with all hairworks options at maximum without ever dipping below 60fps or getting any glitching or stuttering. I also run Eve Valkyrie on the Rift at Ultra settings at a res of 175% and again everything's as smooth as can be (I have maximum pre-rendered frames set to 2 for normal gaming and have recently - about 4 days ago - set it to 2 for VR as well, though I'm not sure it has any effect in VR).

When I got the Rift everything was great for the first few months. It was only until people began reporting problems with their sensor always disconnecting and then Oculus releasing fixes for this did I then start to get regular 'Oculus cant find your sensor' messages, which led me to believe the 'twtching' might be sensor related.

In fact, to slightly contradict my first post, when ASW was first released Oculus Home was unaffected. The only time I ever got twitching was while being parked in a hanger in Elite Dangerous - which was puzzling as this has to be one of the least demanding aspects of that game! Its not until fairly recently (about a month or two ago) that this 'disease' seems to have spread to OH (again, leading me to think it was a sensor issue).

However, regarding not being able to disable ASW in the debug tool (its stays disabled if I switch the computer off and on again and only switches back to auto immediately I don the Rift) has anyone else had this issue?

Well, again, use the overlay to check your FPS in Home, so you know whether you can stop looking at "how to disable ASW permanently" as I'm pretty confident a low framerate and thus ASW kicking in is not your problem. You're so set on this now that you appear to be ignoring the more obvious issue you have, the one with "can't find your sensor" type of messages.

Try different USB ports maybe, remove any extensions if you have any (if possible), check USB drivers are up to date, maybe use the oculus tray tool (sticky at the top of forum) to help you disabling power management on USB devices.

I use the Oculus Tray Tool to disable ASW and it works quite well for me.

After checking the overlay (didn't know about that until now) in OH, in the app frame rate (hz) window I'm getting 90fps but with regular, fraction of a second, spiking down to 87fps and in the performance headroom % window I'm getting a constant number of 73. Don't know if these figures are indicative of a problem.

Regarding the sensor messages, the first thing I tried was plugging into different USB ports (including 3.0, 3.1, and 2.0) and this hasn't seemed to make any difference.

What I was really bothered about in my initial post was ASW auto switching itself back on without alerting me. I mean, if I set something to 'disabled' it shouldn't sneakily switch itself back on without telling me....right!

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. I'll see if I can disable ASW through the tray tool.

Yeah when I was trying to enable it through the key combo when I was doing a benchmark test, it would come back on as well. Not sure what would trigger it to do so. Never had that problem using the OTT though.

I know this thread is kinda old, but the same issues are popping up again here and there, and AppollyonVR is less active in his thread due to work/life stuff and I can't get an answer to why.
So thought I'd share a workaround.

Here's what I noticed with OTT, and why changing my approach to it's use significantly reduced the frequency of the frame dips that seem to happen when ASW is active:

The Oculus Tray Tool (OTT) detects the launch of the title and launches the profile you set.
In most our cases, we want ASW to be forced off, the idea being to have kept my settings just right to hit 90FPS almost always.
OTT has a very neat HUD feature that shows the ASW status -it was showing as "Available - not Active".
This means that it wasn't disabled like it should have been.
My global settings always show ASW as "Off" as do my individual profiles.

Solution?
If you notice the same thing using the Oculus Tray Tool then wait until your VR title has fully loaded up, THEN launch OTT and check the HUD and you will see that it says "ASW - not available" which is VERY different.
As long as you have taken the time to set up your graphics options in a way that maintains 90FPS even under the most intense parts of your VR titles, then ASW will stay off.

On a completely different but related subject, before I discovered this bug with the OTT, I had had enough of massive frame dips on a certain title I play.
Having read about the success of some on VR Skyrim, I used the LEFT CTRL+Numpad X function to play around with ASW, and I found that forcing 45FPS and ASW on whilst also setting the in game FPS limiter to 90 was actually veryu smooth and allowed much more higher level graphical settings to be enabled.
It's not like solid 90FPS but if you have issues keeping 90FPS then this is a very valid option to try.
