Closed Platform VR DRM, Home Store

Synthetic

So, Oculus has sprung upon us a closed platform DRM home store,

Glad I waited to buy and found this out otherwise you would be locking yourself in a contract.
Vive is looking even more tempting now

will it be the DRM that makes Oculus unsuccessful?

The Oculus Store is awesome for just being released. What exactly were you expecting? Vive is looking even more tempting now, what a laugh. I guess your part of the pack of people that are now trying to bash Oculus for something else because of all the glowing reviews about how Awesome the Rift is. Please get a life. If you choose Vive then choose Vive. Stop creating drama where there is none.

It's not block you only have to check a box allowing you to use external source apps

Im not losing over 150 dollars worth of software for no reason then? the point being that you are locked to the home store and it has broken basically everything that has come before 1.3, other than what is in the store

I dont want another DRM... maxxgold I am not a fanboi of vive or oculus.... you would be peeved that stuff is not working too. But you prolly dont even have a headset so... /wrists

Not sure what to tell you Synth, it has been mentioned over and over that the devs need to update their SDK to 1.3 and everything will be back and you won't need to run these app from the store, you can run them from any source as long as they are converted to the 1.3 SDK...You can't expect old hardware/apps to run forever. PS4 can't play PS3 disc for example...

Nothing is locked to the store, not sure why you get that impression. Today everything is a bit screwy but the serious devs will update their SDK soon enough, no worries.

well why is elite, Pcars, and other games consolidated to the store?
why is it not compatible with steam?

will it ever be compatible with steam? .... all questions unanswered and the road not traveled ...

I would hate to get a Rift only to be disappointed by the way this home store works and what it does or does not allow

You can allow unkown source to launch just go into your settings

You don't have to launch anything from the Oculus Home software, you are not locked into their ecosystem, there is a check-box that says you can use sources from outside Oculus home, once everyone starts updating their Apps to 1.3 we will be fine, it is still only early days people 🙂

Pcars works in Steam, the dev has said it does:

We will be updating the Steam version so that you'll be able to play it properly on your CV1 Rift as well, it's just going to take a little time because all our focus has been on getting it ready and working on Oculus Home. In the meantime though, if you can't restrain the urge to support us hard-working devs who spent months getting it to a highly polished VR state, by buying it also on Oculus Store, I promise we won't hold it against you.

As for Elite no clue, didn't do the research...

But it's launch day you can't expect everything to work on launch day lol this is not Utopia

there it is .... ready for working on Oculus home
buy it on oculus store

I remember a time when people were saying "it will be open platform" and

"the new runtime will work with previous runtimes"

also I checked that allow unknown source.... it did nothing

edit: Many apps wont be updated to 1.3 just like the other runtime issues
