Combining mocap with the Oculus Rift

Motion capture specialists Organic Motion have been testing the notion of using open stage mocap and the Oculus Rift to interact within a VR environment.

OpenStage 2 is their latest solution that tracks a user’s body without the need for markers. As part of a summer intern project, the R&D team created software that registered forward movement when the user moved their hands backwards and forwards as done when walking naturally. This is a possible alternative to omni-directional treadmill style devices like the Virtuix Omni and WizDish.

The tracking information was augmented to an avatar integrated within an Oculus Rift test environment so the user could see their virtual body when looking down.

I think that now that PrioVr got traction (no pun indented) Wizdish project should be revived 😄 No need for Microsoft Kinect anymore, maybe even shoes are not that important anymore.

interesting...

i had the idea to experiment with alternating the joysticks;
-tilt left joystick up to take a step with the left leg,
-tilt right joystick up to take a step with the right leg
-if you want to run you would alternate faster and it would be more like a flick motion

i dismissed the above idea based on the premise that perhaps players would feel more comfortable driving their virtual reality avatar like that of a vehicle.

and while i would absolutely love to design a VR game my business sense is telling me to wait it out and see what happens and in the meantime focus specifically on emulation of computer experiences in VR first.
